I've been living on/off in Baja, Mexico for several years as well as travelingi the entire peninsula. Unfortunately Baja has become much more expensive due to the influx of Americans/Canadians there so I'm looking for a new place to spend at least 1/2 of the year on the mainland of Mexico where there are less foreign tourists and less expensive. Need a cool or temperate climate. Now considering Zacatecas or Queretaro or Aguascalientes. Any recent experiences with those living in the interior of Mexico and recommendations..

Forgot to mention - I don't want to live anywhere that has a substantial population of expats as that increases the cost of living anywhere in Mexico. So a place with MINIMAL expats which excludes Lake Chapala.

I summer in Aguascalientes which is quite affordable. There is no gringo influence there. Beware the months of April and May are high rent months due to the famous state fair held in AGS.

I lived in Pachuca for 2 years, and my son is living now in Toluca due to his studies. Both are non touristic, small cities. They are cheaper than the tourist areas but there is nothing to do. Querétaro, Puebla, Guadalajara are very good options =)

I've spent time in San Luis Potosi and liked it. Not many expats around as far as I can tell. Some drug violence around, but the people are really nice and hospitable. As I remember, it's more of a mountain type climate with average temps of 64 degrees.
