Retire in Lake Chapala Area

We're from the Portland, OR area, considering retiring in Mexico and looking into the Lake Chapala area. Would be very appreciative if we could hear from other retirees from US/Canada. Plan to visit for two weeks in Aug. 2017. Any suggestions where to stay while we are there and where to look around and get a sense of permanent housing options (buy or rent).

Since you are asking about staying around Ajijic: at this moment there are three opportunities to house sit in Ajijic/Lake Chapala area listed on www.HouseSitMexico.com. House sitting is a way to live in a real house (and stay for free) while you explore where you would be happiest living in Mexico. (Many other locations in Mexico available too.) Oftentimes taking care of a pet is involved, but not always. If you're interested, please ask me for a discount code for membership. :) Alex

We were just their last week, wonderful area, near perfect Climate. Search the various FB sites there, very active...Search this site too..Look at both Lake Chaplla and Ajijic, minutes apart.. Google Lake Chapla Society..We live in Cozumel and love to visit Guadalajara and Ajijic/ Lake Chapla. You will hook up with a lot of people..Maybe Airbnb.com or VRBO's for rental for your search, be sure to be near by Malacon in Lake Chapla and Town square in Ajijic, best restaurant area there.

Welcome to the prospective Lake Chapala resident set; there seem to be a lot of us right now. My husband and I will make our first visit in July. We are being hosted in a private house in Ajijic for a small orientation seminar for the first 5 nights, and will probably stay in El Pequeno Suites in Chapala for the rest of our stay, to get a little feel for the area's largest town (by population).

I hit send too fast! I sent you a private message. I have further suggestions for newcomers to this group. Browse back through the posts - there are many detailed discussion on health care and insurance, for example. I find it better to browse than search, because I benefited a lot from questions I wouldn't have thought to ask.

In addition to the Facebook groups, consider joining the webboard at lakechapala.com - I have received loads of useful information there. It's a really different group from Facebook. I also learned a lot from reading selectively through older posts. You will see one from me asking about what features make a house comfortable to live in: people gave very thoughtful answers. Also, if you want a book, consider the one by Judy King. She has chapters on history and culture, but also very practical.

I sometimes imagine that the oldtimers on these boards assign odds to the various prospective residents - who will end up doing it (and lasting) and who won't.

El Pequeno Suites in Chapala. A search engine will find it easily, and it's reviewed on Trip Advisor.

There are 2 different "is Chapala right for you" seminars that I know of. The larger, better known and more expensive one, is called Focus on Mexico. We are doing the other one, given by a couple who live in Ajijic, early in July. It's called Retiring Lakeside in Mexico. They take up to 4 people at a time and only do it one week every month. I have heard excellent things about both of them. We preferred the more personal approach of Retire Lakeside, and they had places available during a time we could visit.

I would suggest u do a search on seminar, seen several folks say "seminars," are high pressure real estate shams..Just suggest u check it out first..Great sites,Google Lake Chapla & Ajijic Facebook sites to get the scoop. Also check out Lake Chapla Society site.
