I've decided to move Lakeside but would like help deciding on a town or neighborhood please. i am a spanish speaking experienced Mexico visiter. i am looking for the best option for non-hilly walking opportunities; plaza, malecon, market, store, restaurant, people to meet, things to do. thanks in advance for your input and time spent.

Check out the lake Chapala Society. Probably the best sidewalks I saw around were in Lake Chapala itself. Ajijic is great, but a lot of cobblestone and uneven sidewalks.

Your title says it all. Choose Chapala centro, within 3 or 4 blocks of the plaza/mercado publico. Walking will be great, with easy access to all the shopping, malecon, parks, bus stops & station (for buses to Ajijic or Guadalajara, etc.), good internet, taxis, cultural center, doctors, INM, etc. Expats are sprinkled about, not concentrated, yet there is an American Legion Post 7 with restaurant for a meeting place, or to find rentals on the bulletin board. thanks for the responses here as well as private messages also. I was in Chapala many years ago anf liked it then and from all I've read and videos I've watched, it was already pretty much my numero uno. i am excited about my new future but i have a pile of stuff between me and freedom so it may take a whilemy rarget date is july 2018 at the latest but hoping to make it much sooner. in reply to one comment: i have no problem with Mexican tourists or expats but i don't want to live in Disneyland either. i saw a house for rent in Chapala Haciendas but it looks like that would requir a car or taxi to get to centro, negating the idea of walking out the door nd being someplace. correct? anyway, i have a while to wait but I'm sure I'll be dropping in with more questions because I'm a planner & detail kinda person and i just have to know things

would also like to add that i plan to join LCS online and sign up to hoyse sit. at the very lieast, i will be cheading down to park myself in a B&B and look around. always thought i would be retiring in Cuernavaca or Morelia but have decided i want more of a small town experience at this point

Yes, Chapalla Haciendas is quite a way north of Chapala Centro, and is very, very car-dependent. I do not recommend it; with or without a car, for that and other reasons.

Chapala Haciendas is selling low because they have a lot of problems. I would suggest that you spend some time locally to get the feel of what your options are. I just havethings to work out here or i would be there tomorro. just found out i need to go to CdMx in november, so that adds an extra tiny complication but i sold a truck & camper last night so there is a lake at the end of the tunnel and the path to freedom is clearing out a little. looking forward to meeting y'all on the sunny side as soon as i can

The highway to Chapala Haciendas is not pedestrian, scooter or bike friendly. Many homes there were built on fill and/or otherwise unstable ground. There is access from a poorer area to the rear, which is possibly the reason for some insecurity & there have been recent dog attacks and the claim of a daytime assault mentioned on another forum. That said; there are some nice homes available at attractive prices. One just has to know how to pick the site & house and be aware of the lack of any nearby conveniences. We looked at many areas, when we first arrived at Chapala, and quickly eliminated Chapala Haciendas and Riberas del Pilar. We have had happy homes in both Ajijic (3 years) and Chapala centro (10 years).

Though there are some very attractive homes at attractive prices in San Antonio Tlayacapan, the area south of the highway is low-lying and many properties suffer drainage problems and/or unstable ground & settling. Sewage can rise above ground and street maintenance is extremely poor. Internet service is spotty, new phone lines may not be available and there is a high incidence of break-ins, etc. We fell in love with one particular property with a perfect layout; brand new & shiny at a really good price. It was tempting, but not tempting enough; even with the built-in alarm system and razor wire, which were the first bad sign for me. If you buy there, it can take years to get an offer, when you are ready to sell. Never buy on price; buy location, location, location.
