Hello all,

My husband and I have been researching online; time to spend some time in Mexico. As CozumelDeb said, we are looking at an "exit strategy."

We are interested in talking to any expats who would like to share their experience... let us buy you a drink or a cup of coffee! We will have a rental car and can come to you.

Please PM me!
Laurie

Good luck with your search, Merida is a beautiful historical city and a big city and surrounding areas..You are also going when it is hot, hot ,hot..so if u can handle it now, you're set. I'd suggest you go on Yucatan living.com and Yolista.com..mainly Merida sites..and u will get more feedback..lots of links on Yucatan Living.com. Also take a look at Lake Chapla/Ajijic, in the mountains near Guadalajara..loads of ex-pats, near perfect Climate year round.

Thanks so much for your input and suggestions, Cozumeldeb. We live in Austin where we have some pretty hot weather. I am currently sitting outside on our back porch, it's 93 with 59% humidity. We like it hot, so I guess that area of Mexico should be ok with us. We shall see! I will check out the forums you mentioned, and thanks so much for sharing your personal time with others. There is always good karma in that!

we moved to Mérida from south Florida earlier this year. We did considerable research before chosing where to live. We considered Mazatlan (not enough happening culturally), Guanajuato and San Miguel (too many hills, cobblestones and too high an elevation - plus it gets cold there) and Oaxaca (politically less stable, and also a high elevation) before settliing on Mérida, and we came here to visit five times before making the final move. There are a lot of things to recommend Mérida - it is very active culturally, bustling economically, increasing in social and environmental awareness, and very affordable. Your money will go a lot further in finding a home here than in many other expat destinations. We also have world class medical facilities and shopping. I should mention, as we learned with the tropical storm that brushed by us this week, that Mérida has only been hit by five tropical storms/hurricanes since records began in 1882, so it is one of the least vulnerable areas along the coast. That said, there are challenges, but we have not found any of them to be insurmountable,, and the heat is something that people here have adapted to pretty successfully for thousands of years. We will be in Florida from the 21-26, but will be back during most of your visit, and would be happy to share our experiences. Keith :)
