Tips for driving from PV to Lake Chapala

Hi, we're visiting both Puerta Vallarta and the Lake Chapala areas soon and want to drive between the two. Is that safe? I have read comments here about rental cars - we have one booked, but, maybe have not thought this through. I would appreciate any knowledge or experience anyone could share. Thank you.

There are two choices of routes: The Rt. 200 and 15D Cuota to Guadalajra and then 23 to Chapala, or the toll free mountain route via Mascota, with beautiful scenery and very winding roads, good small town stops and more interest. Take your choice and drive carefully both ways. If you are not experienced at driving in Mexico, I suggest that you use a bus to Guadalajara, then taxi or Uber to Chapala.

Stop in Tequila on the way. It is a great town. Buy a couple bottles, open one up, take a couple of good swigs before you head into Guadalajara traffic :-)

But don't drink and drive. It's too dangerous.

Just turned in my rental yesterday @ Thrifty in PV while my SUV was getting painted. $22/day including insurance for a Chevy Aero. Drive to Chapala all the time. The only danger is the potholes when it rains cuz you can't tell how deep the hole is...
