Does anyone know a reputable real estate rental agen? I sent an email to an agent with Coldwell Banker and got a reply back that there were no rentals available.

That simply means that they, the realty company, have no current listings for rentals available.
You may have to book a hotel or B&B as temporary quarters, while you hit the pavement and look for se renta signs & notes on local bulletin boards; like the American Legion and grocery stores, as well as asking at every small tienda that you pass. The vast majority of rentals are not advertised through agencies, or online. Booking ahead can be almost impossible in the busy season, and only practical for the most expensive rentals at other times.

Mario Garcia at accesslakechapala.com has the most rental listings in the area, and from my limited contact with him, I fiound Mario to be a nice and respectable person.

Everything RV Gringo and the other posters said is true. We are pretty full up and it is difficult to find rentals right now. Excellent suggestion by the other poster for Facebook, both Lake Chapala Rentals and Lake Chapala Rentals by Owner however these postings are mostly for long term rentals, not a month or two, but it's definitely worth checking often.

Here is a blog with all the rental and real estate companies that do rentals.

And here is a blog on some of the places to stay

Hi ......that's the sad fact!.....we actually drove here from Seattle (gulp!), as we new the situation of scarce rentals, and stayed at a relatively cheap but nice hotel, and did our daily search, and you'd be suprised at the number of available rentals around. Lake Chapala Society has a board,, numerous rentals....that was 6 weeks ago, but similar situation today.....I know "Pati", from Coldwell, and knew there was nothing going, but walked in one day, one came up, looked at it...bingo.....if u can come down here, helps a lot!

This is a very good topic. Whom should trust, even before meeting them. My situation is even more critical since I use a wheelchair and have to consider exactly what I'm getting into.

I'm planning a trip to Lake Chapala this winter in order to check it out as a suitable home base for my wife and myself - so finding a suitable rental is paramount. Although, I was told to just go and look for signs that say, "Se Renta" (for rent), I choose Airbnb.com. There many short term rentals available that fit your needs. They are also usually hosted and can be a big help in getting oriented. But, still be careful. Some are scams. Depend on your own wits and be ready to say, "No". It's not rude.

If you are to use a wheelchair, I strongly suggest that you reserve temporary lodgings in Chapala Centro, which can be found online, and find out where you can navigate in Chapala. It is much more feasible than trying to navigate Ajijic. If you have a handicap vehicle, give special attention to where you will keep it, and how to get it in and out, etc. Look at E-W streets; Degollado, Lopez Cotilla, Morelos, Niños Heroes, etc. All intersect with the main avenue, Hidalgo, and have access to the malecon & Parque Cristiania, Bus station, Mercado, etc.

OOPs!
The main avenue, N-S, in Chapala is Madero.
Hidalgo is the E-W street that leads to Ajijic and points west.
