I am wondering, given the debate about the appropriateness of certain posts, if more should be done about the origin of posts. Given the millions of Russian incursions into US and Western internet sites, notably Facebook, to create dissension by pretending to be someone they clearly are not, perhaps this site might consider letting us know the country of origin of the post. I would at least like to know the country of origin of the person insulting me, or anyone, and pretending to be a US citizen or expat living in Mexico. I like most of you would prefer civil discourse, and that might be one way to do it. Though I am sure advertising $$ are the prime mover, eventually people are going to give up on a lot of these sites when we realize there is not much point communicating with liars, phonies and frauds. I live in New Mexico, speak some Spanish and have spent much time living there and am considering going back. And can prove it!

It is problematic, especially when you can use semi intelligent robots to spout provocative idiocy. But something needs to be done. Social media isn't all that social anymore - Obama said it is tearing the country apart and I can't say he is wrong, though it may be an exaggeration - and it would at least be nice to know if the entity you are speaking with is. actually who it purports to be and believes her own arguments.

So, any ideas as to a solution? Other than giving up on social media. Definitely not a good arena for sensitive children. And very difficult to monitor and screen fairly and effectively.

I will stay the "Longtimelurker".

I can understand why a post may not generate interest, but don't get why those who reject something out of hand need to say anything. Some sort of ego thing, I guess. Facebook is full of fakes, and millions of people were exposed to Russian incursions, if you believe anything in the media at all. Including Facebook. One of the kids I know at the gym has a picture of Nick Fury on Facebook account and is highly creative with "intimate details". Social media is still pretty new, can't imagine it will remain anything like this mess in next decade. Think about it.

Social media is ever evolving. It is not what it was 15 years ago (when forums like this were new)

Sometimes it seems like people like to read what they write, like it is some great revelation or proclamation their have to share with the world. This forum is going the way of other forums, a handful of so-called expert expats taking over dispensing BS advice. to wannabe's.

That is when I crawl back into my hole and just lurk

So keep whining about uncivil, bullying, self important, dishonest, too liberal, whatever...posters you disagree with, and then whine when someone tries to suggest possible solutions because they are too self important, like to listen to the sound of their own voices,.too bullying, controlling, snowflakes, whatever... Want some hors d'oeuvres with that?

Things have a tendency to evole over 15 yrs, including people/ex-pats who have lived happily in Mexican communities. Sharing ideas, information with others is usually a pleasant experience. Perhaps you need a break in the action to regroup.

True GiGi, I've been off and on this MX post for some time. We live half time in Chicago and half time in Mexico, and are now since election, we are spending more time in Mexico at our home and also traveling around MX. It would be enlightening to know where folks are from. We'll see if this flies.

Deb, I am afraid regrouping at this point would involve getting off this planet. Avoided this site for several months. I am going to start volunteer work for an organization dedicated to helping those negatively impacted by all the "swamp cleaning". I think problems with social media are worth tackling. President Obama claimed it is tearing our country apart. While that may be an exaggeration I'm not sure it is that far off, and it certainly played a part, according to US intelligence, in our election. Though I know we agree on much, you may feel this site isn't appropriate for serious discussion about economic or social problems, even in Mexico. Which is fine with me. I can easily let this site go. Only a few of you I enjoy hearing from, and Im not addicted to social media. But I do think back fondly to the time you let yourself go and went after one of the seemingly numerous folks on the Mexico site who give the impression that they are all for what is going on in Washington, despite the country, adversely impacted by all the tone deaf action against immigrants, they claim they either live in or are knowledgeable about.
Peace

Identifying social and political malfeasance, misfeasance and nonfeasance is not whining, lurker, and I don't think you can honestly call it that. What do you think the key difference is between the right and the left? Answer, and I will tell you whether you are correct or not.

Larry, some issues I fully support the Liberal view and on other issues I fully support the conservative view. Do not try to classify me. I have lived in a Mexico since 2002. I missed most of Bush Jr. and all of Obama’s presidencies. My view of the USA is of an expat, not a resident. I do visit the USA (mom) quite often every year.

It is very much WHINING. It is ok to complain and your free speech right. The Left is no better at it than the Right was 9 years ago.

Sorry Larry, but I will not answer your question, trying to guess your view on things. I will say that the Left and the Right have lots in common.
1) They both feel their beliefs are correct.
2) Both sides do not listen to each other. They just talk, talk, and talk.
3) The Left and the Right are like 2 different flocks of sheep. The politicians are the sheepdogs and the sheepherder is the media. Y'all have been brainwashed.

I give you an example for #3. Loser Lefty gets up in the morning and during breakfast watched CNN and last night Rachael Maddow show on the DVR. All that is broadcast is how Trump is F'd up and the world is coming to an end. After breakfast it is off to work, sitting in traffic on the freeway listening to NPR for the next hour. After listening to all that "news" you arrive at your office at 10 Main ST. You are very depressed and angry dreading the new day. The Righteous Righty gets up in the morning and during breakfast watches Fox and Friends and CNBC. All that is broadcast is how unemployment is at record lows, manufacturing goods is up and factory jobs have increased, your home is appreciating in value, the Stock Market is booming with no end in sight and Trump is . After breakfast it is off to work, sitting in traffic on the freeway listening to Rush Limbaugh for the next hour. After listening to all that "news" you arrive at your office at 10 Main ST. invigorated, motivated and happy. The Righteous one and the Loser get into the same elevator, with the Righteous one off on the 5th floor and the Loser off on the 6th.

These 2 people live on the same planet but in 2 totally different worlds. That is my view of America today.

The Loser Right whined for 8 years, now they are Righteous. Now the Left gets to whine for the next 7 years.

Gigi, since my response to one of your posts was deleted by Admin (be nice to know why) I will try a different approach.

Besides living in New Mexico, who are you? Are you years away from retirement and just dreaming? Are you retired and ready to make the move? Are you still raising a family? Are you a beach person? Do you want to live with other old Americans? Married? Tell us more about yourself. Share the details.

I read some of your older posts. Not many questions from you, just a lot of your opinion and links to other places for answers to other people questions.

If you are serious about coming to live in Mexico, I will be happy to share my experiences with you.

Lurker, I had no intention of trying to "classify" you - I asked you a fairly academic question the answer to which could only be objective, having nothing to do with you or me, personally, for that matter. Most of the rest of your post is blather. Contrasting the "liberal view" with the "conservative view" is hopeless - do you mean the classical "conservative" view, typified by Adam Smith and William Buckley or the neo-liberal conservative view, championed by Ludwig Von Mises and Dick (deficits are meaningless) Cheney and that crowd? See what I mean?

To me, your refusal at objective analysis, together with your haphazard stereotyping, together with your not-so-subtle name calling (the liberal is a "loser" whereas the conservative is "righteous") says as much about the sophistication of your political analysis as your unwillingness, or should I say inability, to depersonalize it.

The only ground for agreement, as I see it, is that the polity has been factionalized and propagandized to the point that areas of agreement are minimized, but your attempt to equate fact-based reporting of current events and their implications with the alternative universe of people like Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and Fox and Friends - who peddle fear, xenophobia and lies (immigrants, as an example, do not steal the jobs of "Americans") would be laughable if were not so pathetic.

What you have written here is, for the most part, evidence supporting Mencken's observation that no one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Oh 'lurker', where to begin? Calling loser and righteous tells me a little about you. I do see some of your post as rational. But you are so wrong about several things, especially time! We will not be whiing for 7 years, I think the midterms will see a huge change, driving trump further from reality and closer to total insanity.
If you wish to understand how far to the right the so-called conservatives have strayed, one need only google the 1956 republican platform.
The "left" has actually moved further to the right then the rethugs were back then, when corporate tax was in the 90 percent range and the middle(money)class, grew faster then at any other time in history!!

You guys keep skipping from one thread to another. Kind of like a fight starting inside, going into the street, back inside, etc.
LL: no one in a political party,, religion, you name it, agrees on everything. I can imagine Larry and I might, if we really started talking, have serious disagreements about complex, multi faceted issues. But we are much closer together in our views than you and I. And I respect what he has to say and will defer to him, or anyone else, who is better informed about a particular topic.
I see you live in Playa. You seem to be a smart guy, but uneducated in certain issues. And contemptuous of those with book learning and no "boots on the ground" experience". Both are important. .But you missed the point that the people you are communicating with generally have a lifetime of experience, not college freshman, naive and admirably idealistic.
And your posts are full of false equivalences. Trump is getting flack from all over, and for good reason, not just the so-called mainstream media. Even Fox is occasionally critical of him. The leaders in his party no longer in office themselves think, accurately, much of what he does is folly. You need to dig a little deeper.
As for me, I have tried getting help on the Mexico and Nicaraguan sites, two countries in which I have spent some time. Any advice I receive I generally, unless I am familiar with the dispenser, receive with caution. They are generally just informed opinions., sometimes from people like worxs or rvgringo who won't even tell you where they live. As for me, read my post on the other thread where this site originated.

Leia is correct as usual, lurker, and she just scratched the surface - the building of the Interstate Highway system, massive improvement of our national infrastructure, the creation of NASA and the first steps toward the exploration of outer space, the ending of the Korean conflict, passage of the first major civil rights legislation since 1875, taking major steps toward desegregation, the admission of Alaska and Hawaii to the union, the expansion of Social Security and the minimum wage, the creation of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and so on . . . but since you don't really have a coherent political philosophy beyond who you like and who you don't, you may disfavor any or all of the above at random.
