New to this. Plan on retiring in a few yrs. Like the beach and slower pace. Any suggestions how/ where to start?

There are many retirement in MX sites, you can Google. One I think is really good is: www.qroo.com. it's written by a retired cop from FL. Gives nuts + bolts.
First step is narrow down your area of interest, saw you said beaches and that covers a big area. We live in Cozumel, island across from Playa, state of Quintana Roo..Pacific side of MX Matazlan, PV, Cabo etc..huge area big + small towns. Sign up on those sites as well..be aware of areas to avoid from State Dept watch list of narco areas..Visit, travel around, Mexico is retirement heaven IMO. Don't buy for at least a year, rent only. Good Luck.

CozumelDeb is correct about not buying too soon. An alternative to renting is house sitting. When you house and/or pet sit a home you have a free "real home" to stay in. You meet not only the owners but their fellow expat friends and/or neighbors in most cases. House sitting has been a very successful approach to "learning where you'd be happy" in Mexico, used by me and lots of other people who have settled here. Now I own the website: HouseSitMexico.com providing that opportunity to hundreds more. :)
