Hi I have been in and out of Micronesia for a long time. Parents were Dept of Interior and then in local Gov't. also worked in private sector. On many islands the gov faces financial problems and you might not be paid on time. Saipan frequent power and water outages, low pay and most hires outside of Micronesians are Filipinos. Chook Truk, some leprosy exists, you have to remain very clean around your house and with your personal hygiene. People are wonderful but things take a long time to get done, Pohpei can be very frustrating. The language is extremely complex. Palau is the most beautiful but also has serious issues with health care facility as do most of the islands. Yap is pristine. You will never be Yapese so just be yourself. Long stays in islands require joining a few book clubs, adapting to fewer American foods, do subscribe to a newspaper and you if you want to be very popular buy up as many CD movies as you can to share with friends. Naturally dive or snorkel just remember many posionous shells and fish are in the water. Look at them but don't touch. I would remind people not to patronize Micronesians, many are widely traveled and sucessful businessmen quite a few have attended private universities in the USA almost all are multilingual. Show respect for them and it will be returned a thousand times. I loved it, but the wages are low.
