Does anyone have any experience or advice about having a baby in Morocco? We are moving there for work next month and have just found we are pregnant. Trying to work out what to do about maternity care and insurance.

hi, what city are you moving to? i can give you a recommendation for a superb ob-/gyn in Rabat if you like. I lived there for 9 years and I still travel back to keep her as my doctor!! She speaks French and enough English to get you through most anything- including childbirth!! Absolutely WONDERFUL! In general, maternity care is not expensive (compared to US) and you can find the latest equipment and procedures... as with anywhere, not ALL the doctors are good ones, you need a recommendation. Email me if you like.

I've had two children in Morocco. I have a great female ob/gyn who speaks English. Compared to the four births I had in the States, I would describe the experience here as a bit more sterile and clinical, but otherwise fine. Total clinic bill for delivery including private room for an overnight was 5000 dh. My ob/gyn appointments ran about 200 dh each. Sonograms were done during all my appointments in the office..yet I was billed only for the initial scan. I've been here for almost 8 years and a number of my expat friends have also had kids here with no problems. You can request epidural, find a clinic for delivery that has a neonatal unit, etc. Don't worry, insha Allah all will be fine.

Hi Zaydosmom,
My ob/gyn is Dr. Layachi (Tahiri Fouzia)...phone 022 25 56 94. Her office is in Maarif in the middle of the trendy shopping area and she delivers at Dar Salam Clinic, which I believe has a neonatal unit. A number of my expat friends use her, and we've referred her to Moroccan friends and family...all are happy with her.
Her English is pretty good but sometimes she has to fish for the proper word.
Here's another female ob/gyn...Dr. Amrani (imane) phone 022 85 27 27. Can't give her any referral one way or another and no idea if she speaks English, but I have her card b/c her daughter is in class with one of my kids.
In the end, look for someone that you feel comfortable with.
Hope your pregnancy goes well.
~ Amina

Happy to help...hope you like Dr. Layachi.
For those interested, I've just started a blog

where I'll post on the expat experience in Morocco. I couldn't help but use childbirth in Morocco as the topic of my first post.

Hi there Congratulations and I hope all goes well with the pregnancy and birth. I discovered I was pregnant with my 2nd child 3 days before I moved to Morocco from London!!!! I am glad to say that having a baby here (caesarian) was way better than the experience I had when i had my first child also by caesarian in London. My arabic at the time of the birth was very limited and I only understood a bit of French and my consultant didnt speak any english but luckily my husband who is Moroccan came along to all my appointments to translate for me, we live in Tangier and the consultant was recommended by a friend, i had scans at every appointment in his surgery, each visit cost 200 dirhams incl scan, cost of delivery in a private clinic was approx £650 sterling for caesarian & epidural. I spent 3 nights there. The only problem i encountered was that my husband was not allowed into the theatre for the delivery but the nurses etc were all very kind to me and the consultant that had cared for me throughout the pregnancy delivered the baby and thank god everything went great and i now have a beautiful 18 month old daughter!!! The aftercare was also very good. Please feel free to contact me if you need to ask anything and good luck with it all. it is essential though to go private as the public hospitals here are not a pleasant experience so i have heard.

Hi Cosmogirl, I too live in Tangiers (since 1,5 months now) and would really appreciate having some info on a good GYN and of course obstitrician. Also, my son is just about the same age as your child; have you looked into day care (play school) and/or any special children's group activities? As he is an only child, but loves other kids, I am trying to find leads to good play groups he could attend.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. You can reach me by email on koresan (at) free.fr Thanks!!

Also, please feel free to contact me. I would love to meet another English speaking woman here in Rabat. My name is Karen and you can email me directly at khajjoubi@yahoo.com to get my number.

Hi all, I'd greatly appreciate any recommendations and contact information for English-speaking ob-gyns in Kenitra. My husband and I recently found out that we are expecting, and I would really prefer to have a doctor I can communicate with directly (my Darija isn't quite up to snuff, yet!). I would prefer to find a doctor in Kenitra, but am also happy to travel to Rabat. Thanks, in advance, for any information!

Hello,
I recently found out I'm pregnant and living with my husband in Morocco. I was wondering if anyone could recommend an English speaking doctor? I live in Chaouen, but don't mind traveling to Tetouan or Rabat.
