Dogs in Morocco

Ok We will be moving to Casablanca/Dar Bouazza in the summer. We will be looking for a Havanese breeder in the area. I know this is a long shot but we have our fingers crossed to find one. If not in that area does any one know of any dog breeders in Morocco? What about Vets that speak English? I know there is a vet that sees Americans pets as I was told by a member of the Casablanca Woman's club but it was about 2 years ago and I lost the name.
Also any advice on what is available in pet supplys in the area? If you do not know any breeders in Casablanca what about Spain?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Dawn

Hi Dawn, I am a huge dog person, have 4 dogs of my own, and have been through many trials and tribulations re. dog care in Morocco. First, dogs are not overly welcome here, so beware when you move that staff sometimes (not always) are good to your dog in your presence, but hit the dog in your absence. You'll want to look out for signs , at least until you are sure of your people. Secondly, there are few dog breeders here and they are not classified in any way. People most commonly have labradors and/or German Shephards; rarer dog breeds are just about impossible to come by. There is a "store" in Casablanca which sells animal products as well as the animals themselves, but sadly there have been many unpleasant adventures with puppies being sold with Parvo (and consequently dying, I had this happen to me twice!!) and other anomalies. So that place is best avoided. The good news is there are some decent vets, and one vet in particular who is FANTASTIC; I don't know if I am allowed to post his details online, so message me and I send you his info. He can help you identify possible breeders, and is very competent and reactive. It's a good starting point, then you can decide how to proceed from there.
If you really want a Havanese, you might want to bring it with you from the US (customs is not a problem so long as he has his shots). Spain is an option, as is France where I got my dogs but I don't know more about it.

Thanks for the info! We are now not sure if we will be in Casa or Marrakesh so will need to wait on the vet info. I will know more soon as we are working with the school in Marrakesh to try to gey my 2 kids in. If not it will be Casa. I had a feeling that breeders will be few and far between. I guess we will look into breeders in Spain and France.
We could also do a rescue but are hoping for a Havanese as we like the size, temperament and look.
Can i ask what quality foods they might have for dogs? Do you know if they sell puppy pads as they wil be good for training and travel. I know I can get some things sent from the US as I will have family and friends still in the US. Does the store have much selection?
Thanks so much for your help!
Dawn

Hello Moroccrox,

Don't know much about the Havanese breed,But there is a big pet store in Casa (I live in Dar Bouazza)
It has 2 locations. One being very big. Dog food is Very expensive.

On another note, There are tons of Americans living in Dar Bouazza. I thank my stars every day that I live out here!!!! It's a great place to raise a Family.

Hi! Thanks for the info. You say you like Dar Bouazza. Do you have kids? If so what school do they attend? If we can not get into the American school in Marrakech we will be putting them into George Washington in Casa. My in-laws send their kids there.
Thanks!
Dawn

Have you heard of the American Fondouk (spelling??) in Fes? It's American vet organization in Fes that seems dedicated to caring for the working animals in Fes, and educating their owners, but also seems to provide vet care for pets, etc. It's probably too far for what you are looking for, but definitely an interesting organization.

Hi Dawn,
I would live no other place but out here. (Dar B) You can't imagine how many Americans are here. There are 4 American famiies just on my block!!! You have both, Americans working here with kids & Moroccan Husband with there American wives. I have a 6 old son & 3 month daughter. I was gonna send my son to GWA, After talking to some parents they advised me not to. My son only spoke english when we got here (He was 4) If I sent him to GWA at that age they just push the English. I want my son to speak Arabic and French. So I was advised not to send him there till he is about 13/14. So glad I listen!!!!
he speaks great French now & his arabic is comming along. My husband is Moroccan we will be here for ever, He needs French & arabic There are other schools that are really good, Besides the american schools (much cheaper) I could go on & on. don't want to bore everyone. Dawn heres my E-mail zaydosmom&yahoo.com If you have any more questions.

Hi Dawn,
in Casablanca you can find all the basics for dogs, including puppy pads. The animal store that I mentioned previously sells all these things, although with a very high mark-up. I personally refuse to shop there because the management has very dubious ethics when it comes to animal care, and although the owner is a vet (in name), i have met several dog owners that have encountered problems with the quality of his care (including my two dead dogs which he sold me!!). So at most get your products there, but try checking out other veterinarians before deciding which is best for you.
Most vets also sell dog food and flea/tick medication, but not necessarily other puppy supplies.
good luck with your move,

HI!
I am Petra, journalist. I live in Slovenia and I was in Morocco during the new years time. I would like to write now the article about dogs in Morocco and I will be very happy if someone tells me something more about this subject (are there any shelters, dog exibitions, do they train dogs for any kind of sport/work).
Thanks for now. :-)

Hi

I saw your reply to Dawn regarding 'adopting' a dog in Casablanca and I wonder if you'd be kind enough to forward the contact details for the vet you have. My ex-husband (who lives in Casa), would like to 'adopt' a dog for our son (who lives in the UK), and I'd like the dog to be obtained from a reputable source!

Hope you can help.

Many thanks.

Heather
