Hi Summerlee,

Given that it is illegal in Morocco for unmarried people to live together or sleep together, and that it is the moroccan who is most likely to get into trouble (although not completely unknown for the partner also to get arrested), I just wondered how you were managing this situation?
I have a moroccan boyfriend who has said he thinks the police turn a blind eye to this situation, unless someone makes a complaint to them. On the other hand, I have spoken to other people who say that being caught can result in a very serious problem. This has made me rather nervous & concerned for him when I go to visit from the UK.
Have you ever had any trouble on this issue? I'm assuming, given your background, that you don't exactly look moroccan & that you are not pretending you are married?

Any thoughts or experiences gratefully received!

Hi there.

I see that your usuer name starts with marrakech. So im guessing your bf live in Marrakech. My now husband on the other hand lives in Agadir. So that we would not get arrested i came to morocco from New Zealand with a paper translated both french and arabic stateting the no impediment to marriage for me and my moroccan partner from the new zealand government. we both went together taking this paper to the main police station and also another paper stating our engagement and living arrangements authorized by the legalization de signature du maroc. They had no problem with us living together prior to our marraige becoz i had the no impediment to marriage paper. Also taking into consideration before me and my partner were married we didnt live alone in a aprtment. We lived in the family home consisting of prety much everyone from his side. We also have reltive conections within the police department who was able to make the process for us far more easier and less painful and time consuming. My advice and only advice when you come visit your partner in Morocco. Get an engagment stating that he looks after you at the same address for the full duration of your stay. Get it locally legalized and carry it with you everywhere. we had a police man stop us once in the city centre and we showed him just this paper and he let us on our way. I have now been here for 9 months. I hope i have helped you. :) When are you thinking of comming to morocco. If you were comming to agadir then perhapes we could meet up

Hi there
Yes there are English speaking people in Agadir me being one I am from Ireland and living here with my partner for the past year and by the way we have not encountered any trouble re living together. I think the poster who said if you cause no trouble all would be ok re living together and not married.
If you want to pm me I would be delighted to meet for a coffee. I live in the city centre so am within walking distance of lots of nice cafes.

Hi summerlee & all the English speaking people in Agadir & throughout Morocco ~ I also have been seeking English speakers in Morocco. My husband's business may require us to move to Morocco, but I have been reluctant because I speak English and a little Spanish. We would love to live near other English Speaking people in Agadir preferably, but not necessarily IF we found another small community of English Speakers. So not only do I want to meet for coffee, etc. I also want to be located near other English Speakers. Am I being unrealistic??? If not, where are you located??? TY

Hi There,

Although you are considering basing yourself in Agadir, you have asked about other cities & so I thought I would respond.

I live in Marrakech & have not found any sort of english speaking 'community' here.

It seems to me that most 'expat communities', however loosely organised, are a feature of countries where multi - national companies are important in the commercial landscape and where significant numbers of their staff move regularly - resulting in such people coming together at children's schools, country clubs, special expat bars etc.

This is not how most expats have arrived in Morocco. They are much more likely to arrive as individuals, rather than as part of an organisation and they usually want to be part of a completely different culture - indeed the Brits I have met here all speak French &/or Arabic to some degree. So, although I know that there are a considerable number of Brits living in Marrakech, they seem mostly to live 'under the radar' and are not looking necessarily to socialise with other Brits.

I can understand why you would be nervous about moving to a country where you do not speak the language - so could you think about taking french lessons before you arrive to help you communicate?

Personally, I feel that a much bigger issue is the cultural gulf between what you are used to & what is the norm in Morocco- and particularly for women. See if you can get hold of a book called "Culture Shock Morocco" - it is written for Americans & is not entirely accurate, but will help to give you a feel for how things are here.

Hi FarahL,

Thank you for responding. You have given me much information to consider. I will definitely take at least a basic French speaking class. Also, I will try to track down "Culture Shock Morocco".
