Hi There, I made the mistake of bringing over my much loved & well cared for 6 year old car from the UK last year and this year, after trying all sorts of angles, I had to get it back out of Morocco again & give it away. I am therefore looking to acquire a decent small car - but in Marrakech the cars are all in rubbish condition and very expensive. Does anyone know of any reputable 2nd hand car dealers in Casa or Rabat? Also, does anyone have experience of buying say, a 3 year old car in Spain, where I believe car prices may be depressed, and then importing it via Tangier? I have heard that Moroccan import duties will literally double the cost of the car: does anyone have experience which can validate this please? All help & advice gratefully received, but please don't use this as an opportunity to flog me an old wreck!!

I am sure you are aware of this, but for anyone who is not aware: 1. You cannot buy a Moroccan registered car, nor can you import and register a car as Moroccan, unless you have a "Carte de Sejour". 2. As a result of a new law passed last year, you can only use your foreign driving licence for one year. After that you are required to have a Moroccan driving licence. Certain countries have an agreement whereby you can swap your licence for a Moroccan licence. Unfortunately the UK is not one of these countries. 3. You will have to take a two part test, both theory and practical. You have to register with a driving school to do this. The theory test is 40 questions, and up until last year you had to get 30 out of 40 correct to pass, although there was talk of putting this up to 35 out of 40 4. The test is conducted in either Arabic or French. I believe you can arrange to have an interpreter present if necessary.

Here is the link to the website for importing a car into Morocco. Since the law changed, you cannot import a car which is more than five years old. Taxes are quite prohibitive. For example, a Renault Clio 1.4 originally registered abroad on1st July 2010 with a value of 143,700 dh when new will currently cost 44,513dh to import into Morocco.

Hi Kato, Thanks so much for all of your advice: I now wish I had posed the question BEFORE I brought my car into Morocco! I have now had experience of many of the issues you have outlined, but some of the information you have offered was completely new to me. If you would like to send me the details of your car and the price you are looking for by private message, I will take a look at it.

Hi Zohor I've seen a number of your posts during my research into buying a car to use in Morocco and can see you are very knowledgeable - most helpful when others seem to be contradicting each other! I think I am now convinced not to import a car into Morocco. But what about buying one there? Is it true you must have a carte de sejour to buy a Moroccan registered car? If so, to get around this can my husband, a Moroccan, buy the car and just add me to the insurance? We simply want to buy a car and keep in Morocco to use when we are there, which can be quite frequent so we are sick of forking out for hire cars. The other option is to have a resident import from say France- what are the pitfalls with that option? Any advice hugely appreciated. And if you know anything about buying a house in Morocco please also let me know. Thanks in advance. Dawn
