I have a 12 month contract in marrakesh to stay in an apartment, the lady who owns it is saying she wants to now sell the apartment my contract ends 1/6/17 I have friends coming to stay in May but she says I must leave before then as her buyer wants to move by 1 April she says she only has to give 2 months notice, but I've had nothing in writing, I'm in England and my flight is booked to go back 3 may, how do I stand all my things are in the apartment and all my furniture.

Just tell her sorry I'm not moving. If she doesn't accept the rent, contact a Huissier de Justice and tell him you wish to pay but the owner refuses the payment. He will contact the owner and if she still refuses to accept payment the monies will be deposited at the Tribunal by the Huissier and he will provide you with a receipt. If you don't know how to contact a Huissier there are over 20 listed in the yellow pages for Marrakech. If you have already paid the rent for the whole of the contract just ignore the owner.

Thank u so much for your reply, that helps a lot, I now think she realises she's in the wrong because she said just pay the last two months of your rent, and then it will be returned to you at the end of the contract ( may) but again because of her attitude i have a feeling she will try to not pay it back ?

Your feelings are probably leading you in the right direction. It sounds like she is trying to extract the maximum amount of cash from you before pulling the trigger.

Hi There, I have no idea what a 'Huissier de Justice' is- but I can recommend a very good notaire in Gueliz, who speaks english. Please contact me privately if you would like her details. You could also contact the Honorary British Consul in Marrakech to see if they have any advice &/or Marrakech City Hall. I am sure this landlady would not like to see the full force of the law brought to bear on her. Did you give her a large deposit as part of your rental agreement? She is legally obliged to return that in full to you at the moment she gives you your notice .... I have never yet seen anyone's possessions out on the street, so don't panic yet- but you will almost certainly need to pop over here for a couple of days to sort this out.
Fingers crossed for you.
