" I''m an Italian architect who is moving to Madison for a year on a work training program. I''d like to know 1) what the basic cost of living is there, ex: food, rent, bus fare, etc. 2) I''d also like to know what an average salary might be for a young architect working in a studio? and, 3) the weather? 4) Is Madison a safe city to live in? Thanks, Francesca "

" Madison has been rated one of the best cities to live in the US. The University of Wisconsin draws students from all over the world and is one of the most respected educational and research institutions in the nation. Because of the university it is considered a college town and has many students. Housing is tight and the cost of living is slightly above average. Studio apartments usually start around $450 US per month. You usually have to pay your own electricity and phone but you need to ask when renting as to what is included. Madison is relatively easy to get around without a car as long as you live near the campus. A bike might be a good investment when you arrive(and a lock). Madison is relatively safe. It is the state capital of Wisconsin and has wonderful cultural and recreation activities. If you move there make sure you take advantage of all the outdoor activities it has to offer. The winters can be brutally cold in Madison but with the right clothing and good company it can be very enjoyable. I am not sure what life as an architect will be like but between Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago there is enough architectural diversity to give anyone lots of ideas. "

" I''ve lived in Madison for 8 years and I agree completely with the previous post. It''s a beautiful, comfortable, fun mid-size city, and unusually safe for its size. The culture is liberal and artsy, and there are plenty of things to do. Lots of live music, good restaurants, beautiful lakes and sporting activities in summer. Salary.com on the web offers information on local salaries for your profession. But I''ve also checked with a friend of a friend, someone who is a cad designer, and she says the salaries on salary.com are a little inflated. If you have further questions, feel free to contact me. " Hello Francesca, I have lived in Madison all my life and love it. My wife and I are leaving for a year in August...maybe you''d like to rent a nice house? :) I''d be happy to answer whatever questions you might have by email. Regards, Karl Hassrick [email protected] "
