" Hello, I am slowly preparing to move at the end of the summer, from San Francisco to Munich. One thing I would love advice on is shipping one''s belongings. I won''t be sending furniture - just a lot of books, computer stuff, cd''s, my skis, clothes (I''m moving for 2 years to write and research my doctoral dissertation). Is there a particular shipping company that anyone can recommend? Is UPS too costly/not the right choice? (I have a lot of books - and will have a lot of relatively heavy boxes) While I can stand to be without everything for a couple of weeks, I don''t want to choose an option that will take too long. What is a good rate (so I''ll know if I''m being over-quoted)? Any tips would be very much appreciated! I''ve never done this before so I have way too many questions than answers! Thank you very much, Sophia "

" I am also looking for the same info. but moving to Thailand. One thing I have discovered it that the USPS has an excellent rate for books called Media rate. Time in transit is probably a month or less to Europe, although you can easily check on their web site. Besides UPS, check DHL and FEDX. Also get a flight with a very large personal freight allowance, even if the ticket is more expensive. Good luck and hope someone who has done this before will respond. "

Hi again! I found an excellent resource to address these questions. Although written re.moving from US to England it is entirely relevant. http://sparky.ls.luc.edu/sandell/ukfaq/uk_faq.html#moveintro

" Thanks for the suggestions. Although since I posted that message, I''m now wondering if I want to ship more than my books and go with a larger moving company after all. Decisions, decisions! "

" I used USPS''s media rate to ship a box of books to Hungary about two years ago. It took over 2 months to get there. So I''d send your books well in advance to make sure they get there by the time you do, if that''s possible. It was cheap though. "

" When my mother moved about an apartment''s worth of stuff with her to Hungary about two years ago, it cost her $4000 to do it. So I would advise you to leave your furniture here unless it''s stuff you really can''t live without for the next two years. Incidentally, I''m also trying to gather information about this as I plan for my move back to Hungary at the end of this year. Thus far the plan is to mail whatever I can''t fit into a suitcase (like books), but sell *everything* else before I go. If you find a good deal with a shipping company, let me know. My understanding is that it''s hideously expensive no matter which one you choose. "
