We currently live in Texas, USA. Offically, we have a lot of freedom, but it's only surface layer freedom. There's a lot of risks to being here. The government is becoming more hostile. We are a bit atypical because we homeschool and choose alternative healthcare. We also have 4 kids. I'm a bit concerned that at some point we could be targeted by our government. You just never know. One nosy neighbor saying you let your kids play in the fenced backyard without being out there and you could get in trouble even though, that isn't really dangerous... or asking for a second opinion at the hospital if your kid is sick and they might just take your child away. It's getting ridiculous.
Are there any real "free" countries where you can do your own thing and not have to worry the government will destroy your family? My husband is in civil engineering and has a very good resume and 9+ yrs experience. He has a mechanical engineering degree from Romania as he's Romanian. I've considered Romania, but they lack opportunities and I don't know how free they really are either. My kids could become dual citizens because of their father. One already is. So, they would have the possibility of being EU citizens. I'd still be stuck as only American, but yeah. Any thoughts? Is this world just going to crap with all of our freedoms being ripped away from us now? I'd want to continue with homeschooling if we go somewhere else.
Thanks in advance.

I would imagine with an engineering degree your husband could find work in a Latin American country or a SE Asian one like Cambodia where one has more real freedoms than in the US or Canada.

Your question is hard to address since you seem to imply that you are married with children and one of you must work to achieve financial success. It´s difficult for expats to assess the "freedom" allowed in the environments in which they have chosen to live versus other environments in which they do not reside. For instance, we are retirees living in Mexico as we have for 14 years in both highly urbanized Metropolitan Guadalajara and the rural Chiapas Highlands. We are U.S. and French citizens and also hold Mexican citizenships. we enjoy an extrordinary amount of freedom in both urban Jalisco and rural Chiapas and from that point of view would highly recommend Mexico as a place to live in general. However, no matter your qualifications, it is not easy to find meaningful legal employment here although, if you have skills Mexican authorities assess as useful to the Mexican economy and bona fide employment opportunities you may succeed in finding employment here. If you are gainfully employed or financially independent, this is a fabulous and very free environment in which to live and home school your kids. Good luck to yo wherever your search takes you.
