I am applying for my Resident Visa in a few months. I wish to ship a container with my auto but was informed by one company that I CAN ship my auto after I apply for my Visa but another company said that I CANNOT. Which one is right? Has there been a change? Shipping from the U.S. Thank you.

Can't help you but can you tell me where you're shipping from and how much it's going to cost you with shipping and with import tax?
I am trying to decide whether to ship or to buy down there.

Oops I assumed this was for Costa Rica, now I'm not sure. I don't see where it says...

Unless one is in love with their vehicle or has a special reason for driving down, it's cheaper to just buy one on arrival.

busman, are you talking about "down" to Costa Rica?
If so I am curious as to how it's cheaper because this is what I hear: (tell me if I'm wrong):
Most used cars in Costa Rica are shipped from USA and the same import fee is paid by the person importing whether it's private party or business.
So if the same import fee is paid it would then stand to reason that if I buy a used car here and check it out closely myself it is going to be a better car and cost less - because the business importer selling the car in Costa Rica is going to charge a profit on it, plus it may not be as good as the one I choose.
Sounds like I'm arguing with you but I'm not, I'm just playing devil's advocate based on what I have heard as to why it's better to ship one as opposed to buying it in Costa Rica.
If you have reason to believe otherwise please explain.

I still don't see where you are considering going.
Please be aware that a number of countries outside the US will not let you ship cars to their countries as they want only cost efficient fuel saving newer cars. You need to check this for all the destinations you are considering moving to.
We have lived in a number of countries and found it an expensive option and usually local vehicles are fine and reasonably priced.

This is posted in the GLOBAL Forum people. It is a country SPECIFIC question and as such you EACH need to post in the forum for the country you are talking about.
There is no 'one size fits all' answer although some basic principles are common to all.
Anyway, go away and start a thread in the country you are looking at buying in or shipping to.

Samramon, there is a recent thread in the Cost Rica forum on this exact subject. Go and look for it and read it.
