where to retire

Hello all, My wife and I live in the USA, in Utah and want to retire hopefully in the next 3 years. We have been researching and learning about different places for about the last year and a half. I think we have narrowed it down to either Panama or Ecuador. I was hoping to get some input from people who have retired to these countries, pros and cons, that sort of thing. I know to actually get a feel, you need to visit. Our plan is to start doing this next year with a visit to Panama. We do not want to live in a large city, but something smaller but close enough to have the benefits of the large city, mainly medical facilities.
Thanks for any advice and help any can give.
Shane

Hi, please make sure you are OK with humidity if you go to Panama, and parts of Ecuador. Climate is ok in several parts but they are smaller cities with less to do.

If you haven't done it yet please make lists of your 'must have and must NOT have issues' before you go much further. Don't forget that there is much more of SA that is great to live in. Do LOTS of research not just the more obvious destinations. For instance Uruguay, Chile and Boliva are lovely to live in, stable and beautiful..........

Ecuador—The World’s Number 1 Retirement Haven

From massive benefits to a low cost cost of living it is a beautiful place to retire in. The next thing you need to think of is moving your annuities across... I can give you some advice regarding transferring your money. But otherwise I wish nothing but happiness to you and your wife.
Safe travels :)

I live in Boquete Panama. It is only humid near the coast or in Panama City. When you get in to the highlands the weather is much cooler and it is not humid. The average daytime temp is 77 and about 10 degrees cooler at night. Perfect weather for me.

I've also been to Ecuador several times. Cuenca is nice. But at 8500 feet it is way too cold. Even with a sweater and jacket I was wishing I had a heater but few places have heaters. Rents are a little more affordable in Educador but the 14^ sales taxi is terrible and so it the cost of any electronics.

The economy and stablitiy of the government is much better in Panama than it is in Ecuador too.

International Living just published their 2016 report about the best places in the world to retire. PANAMA won again!

Funny enough, I'm from Utah as well with the same question. Although I'm 40 and I can't retire - I want to start investing in real estate/rental property and a place we can spend a few months out of the year.

I have read a ton about Ecuador as well as colombia. Both seem fantastic. My biggest issue is the cost of travel from and to Utah. Because of this I am starting to focus more on central america. Roatan is top of my list right now, next to Belieze. Keeping travel back and forth cheap is an important factor for me.

I started a new thread on this topic rather than respond to you specifically blkbemr1.

I see it as a much more general topic that applies to anyone contemplating such a move, rather than just a question to be answered to a specific person about their specific plans.
