Dear Expats,

As part of my Bachelor’s thesis at Paderborn University (Germany), I am conducting a study, which deals with the determinants in the expatriate adjustment process.

To be able to carry out my study I need your help. I am seeking input from expatriates who are currently on international assignment.

Your perspective is crucial and can help us to understand this adaptation process more in depth. To access the online survey, please click on the link below or copy and paste the link in your browser:

The questionnaire takes approx. 10-15 minutes of your time. There are two links at the end of this survey, which you may want to forward to your life partner and supervisor. These questionnaires take approx. 5 minutes and can help us to assess the work environment. The language used for all surveys is English.

Of course, you will receive, if desired, a report with the results of this study.

The survey is completely anonymous. We ensure that the information submitted to us will remain confidential. We will evaluate the data without name and address.

Should you need any further information about this study, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks in advance for your time and best regards from Paderborn!

Why is it that students think they can write a survey that will give them worthwhile answers about something they know nothing about to begin with?

I had a look at your survey. First, I would not provide some stranger any of the initial information you ask for. Have you never heard of identity theft? You are asking far too many personal questions. I simply gave false answers to get through the first pages to see what questions you were then going to ask about anything to do with expat adjustment.

When I got to the relevant page, what did I find? Multiple choice questions. What's more they are questions designed to lead to a pre-conceived perception of what the factors affecting expat adjustment are.

How would you even begin to know what questions to ask to find out what matters to expats in terms of adjustment? Based on what KNOWLEDGE about expat adjustment do you come up with the questions to ask.

Your survey is a waste of time. If you want to write a paper on what expats find difficult or easy to adjust to in a new country, then YOU have to do the work to find the answers and you will not get it by asking OTHERS to do the work of filling in your simple survey.

Go online and READ in expat forums. You will find countless threads that talk about adjusting as an expat. Then YOU can compile all that info that you find and come up with a paper that actually does refer to what EXPATS consider adjusting to be all about.
