From the war deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq to rejection in my mother land!

At 24years, I had just completed my studies, an undergraduate degree and also a diploma in procurement and supplies. Unlike other young men and women with similar qualifications who normally find themselves in white collar jobs, I found myself in the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq. In a war I only saw glimpses of on CNN and BBC news. How this happened, I really don’t know. Maybe I was too naïve at the time or I was too excited at my first job being a dollar paying job. I took the risk to go and provide logistics and life support services to the NATO forces as a subcontractor under NATO support and procurement agency to cater for my extended family back at home in Kenya. It was not a normal white collar job for me even though I spend most of my time behind a computer working as an admin and inventory coordinator. From time to time the rocket siren would go off and all would be required to go to the bankers until the all clear was given by the military. From time to time the Taliban would conduct ground attacks on our camps disrupting the normal activities of an office job. These kind of scenarios happened on a daily basis for the 9 plus years I worked for NATO as a subcontractor (under Supreme group – Dutch owned and Sodexo – French owned) and a US owned company Schwob in Afghanistan and Iraq respectively.
Many soldiers and civilians were killed by the Taliban’s during this time but for unknown reasons I still choose to remain there and support the fight against global terrorism and at the same time gain valuable experience in my field of expertise which is inventory and logistics. Little did I know that this experience would mean nothing to employers in my native Kenya. With the war in Afghanistan coming to an end and subcontractors losing contracts and global oil prices hitting record low prices companies were forced to reduced significantly their staff numbers and I had to eventually come back home and with the experience I had gained working for international companies I expected to slot in easily in the Kenyan job market.
To my surprise this has not been the case, every CV I have sent out has received a consistent response from recruiters that I do not meet the “Kenyan market standards”. Sarcastically enough, my immediate boss Martin Bellis-Jones is surprised that I am yet to find a job in Kenya considering how good I was in things logistics and inventory. And this is also my personal view and the view of many other expats I worked under going by the numerous awards in terms of certificates of exemplary work I received from military commanders and my employers.
All that said, I am pleading with expats living in Kenya whose nations I risked my life to serve and help achieve the mission of fighting global terrorism to please review my CV below and consider me for employment in whatever organizations they run in Kenya and I will be forever grateful as I will be able to cater for my young family.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Modix.
