Hi everyone! I'm looking to learn how expats worldwide ingratiate and assimilate abroad. What can a new arrival do to endear themselves to their host country? How can one blend in beyond the obvious (learn the language, avoid cultural faux pas)? I want to know how you, as expats, approach a move to a new country. A selection of these responses will be featured (and credited) in an upcoming issue of AFAR, an experiential travel magazine based in San Francisco, CA.

I do not recommend that expats try to "ingratiate" themselves with locals. See the definition: "bring oneself into favor with someone by flattering or trying to please them. "a social climber who had tried to ingratiate herself with the city gentry" synonyms: "Integrate" might be the better choice.

I too noticed that faux pas Mendocina. Pretty bad for someone who is soliciting writing for a magazine. But then I guess you don't have to be a writer to start an online magazine, you just have to be able to persuade those who do know how to write, to write for you, for free.
Maybe if the OP tried 'ingratiating' him/herself a bit more, they could persuade someone. LOL
