Your question is too broad jsandford1968.

There are over 200 countries in the world and to narrow that list down you need some specific criteria to start with.

For example, the countries that are available to a retiree with a decent income differ from those available to someone who has to work for a living.

Some people have more than one passport which provides access to say all of the EU countries.

Some people have a language preference or specific activities/interests that want to be able to pursue. Some people insist on flush toilets.

Whatever critieria list YOU come up with is up to you but you need to do that first and come up with a short list of potential countries based on YOUR research. THEN you can ask about those various countries specifically.

To ask, 'where would you suggest', will only get you back to the list of 200+ countries if enough people were to respond with THEIR, not YOUR preferences.

Thanks. Good point. I've been looking at jobs, cost of living, location, weather, etc. I really like the possibility of Spain. I'm looking into teaching an English class there. I'd love to see some of Europe and Africa and it seems like a good location. Any thoughts on Spain?

If you are thinking of teaching English as a means of earning a living, then go to eslcafe.com and ask your questions there.

It is probably the number 1 forum for ESL.

Thank you. With my past experience, I can also teach horse riding lessons, and personal fitness training. I see what I can come up on ESL. Would Craigslist be a good place to look for rentals?

Hi Jsanford98, I'm not as well travelled as the other users on here so I'm probably not best placed to offer advice on where to go.... but have you considered online TEFL courses https://www.theteflacademy.com/online-course ? Might be a great way to learn in your free time while you look around for where you want to go. Then once you've decided you can enjoy your new surroundings with something to fall back on if you ever needed a few extra pennies.

Could I ask why you'd rather not live in Asia?

The first hurdle you have to overcome jsanford1968 is getting a visa that allows you to live and work in a country.

There is no point in asking about teaching or driving licenses until you have an answer to that first question. My guess is you do not have an answer to that question.

Getting a visa to live and work in any EU country is not easy. Take a look at the Spanish government immigration website and see what it takes to qualify for such a visa.

I'm basically in a similar boat as far as wanting to get out of the sinking ship. My fiance and I have connections to people in France, Ecuador, India, and Ghana. ATM, we have the most useful info about Moving to France under a Student Visa or moving to Ghana with a special extended visa (the name of which eludes me at the moment) which opens one up to applying for a work visa later).

As for helpful bits of advice from my digging into expatriation, so far: If you personally know any expats living abroad, talk to them first and pick their brains, it was extremely helpful in narrowing my inquiry into how to go about this.

That said, I'm on this forum now, to glean ideas/avenues of approach.

I suggest Panama as a first destination if you choose Latin America. Advantages are you get a 6 month visa instead of 90 days in other countries. Due to labor shortages you can work 6 months in Panama on a Tourist
Visa. Overall I found Panama cheapest to live, mainly because manufactured items were cheaper due to the presence of the Canal. The bad news is salaries are very low compared to US Don't even think of going into any business util you have lived in the country at least 2 years. And don't put the cart in front of the horse b bringing your household possessions until you obtain residency and ship by sea carrier.

Forget Craigslist for anything. Might try Ecuentra24.com
