American Expats and Trumpcare

First, expats spend forever agonizing over how exactly the ACA (Obamacare) was going to affect them. No sooner did all the dust settle and now we have the Trumpcare flag running up the pole.

I did a bit of searching, and so far the only information has been somewhat generic. One item of note is the frequent mention of the tax credits being shifted from being based on premium cost and income, to just being age based. Scant, detail available, but one wonders if this might be an unintentional benefit to US expats. Would a $4000 tax credit ( tax credits differ from tax 'deductions' in that with a deduction, you deduct an amount from your taxable income, but with a tax 'credit', you get a true dollar for dollar deduction of tax owed). Then again, this would probably create another annoying reconciliation area for US tax returns to country of residence tax returns.

If you are an American residing abroad, then Obamacare doesn't apply to you, you are exempt.

Wasn't really the point of the post, but in reply, it did take a while for people to get to that realization. I recall the early posts had lots of questions and confusion.

The Trumpcare topic is moot now. But one of its key components was a tax credit. Had it passed, there would be questions about whether expats abroad, paying for healthcare, either private, or buying into a State system, would be eligible for those credits.

The original post has nothing to with applicability of Obamacare (ACA) to expats. It was speculating about Trump's possible changes to health care after he repeals Obamacare. Since Obamacare has not been repealed/replaced, this is all moot.
