Im a british student looking at the possibility of marrying my American Girlfriend, but I am worried by the visa processing times and the costs.

As students, niether me nor my girlfriend have much money, and i worry that I will have to take out a loan to prove im financially capable. How much does the US government ask you to have in funds in order to get a fiancee/spouse visa?

Also, is it better to go to America on a fiancee visa then get the spouse visa processed while im there, or just to get married in the UK then apply for a spouse visa?

Thanks

It does't really matter where you get married, I married my US wife in UK then applied for spouse visa, whilst we were both living in Germany. I don't think you can apply whilst in US, you have to go through US Embassy in London.
As for financial responsibility, if you don't have sufficient funds then you could get someone to sponsor you (I got my In-Laws t sponsor me) really easy to do. The Embassy can tell you how much you need to self sposor, I don't remember how much the amount was, but it was something to do with the US Poverty rates.
Hope this helps,

I am an American citizen (22 years old) who recently married a Dutch girl that I met while I was studying abroad. We are almost done with the immigration process and while we took an atypical route towards a visa, there are some steadfasts. You will want to apply for a "K" visa; there are categories for fiancee or spouse visas. The fiance option is the best because being able to be with her while the thing gets processed is crutial: it can take 8-18 months. I do not want to give you any legal advice because I am not a lawyer but I can tell you that you shouldn't let the money requirements scare you. There is a form they give your fiancee, the American citizen, to fill out which asks if her income satisfys x% of the "poverty" minimum (derived from income statistics, always very low). The great thing about this form is that it allows a co-sponsor who can use money or assets to fulfil the requirement...they dont even have to be related to her, it can even be your parents. You have to gather a lot of tax returns, bank statements, draft an employer letter, or get assets appraised but the process is very simple. One piece of advice is apply early for the visa. First and foremost speak to an attorney before you do anything and secondly browse this site to get a good sense of how things work (www.visajourney.com). Always know that anyone's opinion regarding legal matters on internet posts are suspect so ALWAYS consult an attorney. It might seem over the top or expensive but possible visa mistakes can result in months of seperation, thousands of dollars in squandered fees/airline tickets, and the obvious strain of a long distance relationship. I wish you the best of luck!
