I'm curious to know if anyone actually applied for Social Security Disability while living abroad. If so, how did you do it? If you had a hearing, where was it? Did you have any representation?

as a general rule, one who receives ssdi can not live out of the u.s. or its' territories for more than 30 days or all benefits will cease. you must maintain a "relationship" with your health care provider in general once each 60-90 days. so when your recertification comes up your visits are in your medical files. but yes, as most things, there are ways around it, but all take a risk. hope this helps, john g.

SSI and Disability Social Security are two different animals! SSI is a state program, is income-based, and yes you do have to live in a U.S. state to apply and receive it. Disability Social Security is a federal program, and you can apply for and/or receive it while living abroad. My husband received Disabiity SS before we moved to Mexico 4 years ago and still receives it, and yes they know we live full-time here. I recently applied while in Tucson, and made clear to the representative that I lived in Mexico. Had I chosen, I could have applied at the consulate in Guadalajara, which is the one designated for our region. I do have to go back to Tucson for exams related to my eligibility, but I did tell the rep. that I could return to the states for those if needed. It's probably possible to get the physicals in your "adopted" country if coming to the states is not feasable, but I don't know for sure. There is information for expats receiving Disability SS on the Social Security website.

Social Security has long been imagined to be a good investment, on balance. Many people, for most of the agency's history, have gotten more than they paid in in disbursed Social Security benefits. However, a recent Associated Press analysis revealed that it's not the case anymore. More here, https://personalmoneynetwork.com

You may apply for Social Security income while living abroad. It can be done online. You are not allow SSDI while living abroad. Consider yourself lucky, that the rep. did not report it.

You can receive SSDI while living overseas in most countries. You cannot receive SSI if you are outside the US for more than 30 days. There are some country restrictions. See SSA website or this brochure:

SSA actually operates a division specifically set up to deal with international matters. It’s called the Office of International Operations (OIO). OIO allows people to:
apply for retirement benefits; apply for disability benefits; do an eligibility screening; and estimate benefits.
