If you have good reliable lightly used household furnishings, it is probably worth shipping your things in. Choice in stores is very limited and prices are very high, plus if you order things from stores that need to be shipped in by them, the timetable can stretch for months. Make sure your appliances are common makes like Whirlpool so that service and parts are available here. We tried to buy local and support our local merchants but at least on Abaco, there is not a similar commitment to provide excellent service and followup. It feels like the local merchants we deal with on Abaco have no control over when they get new shipments and what will be on the boat. If you have things you like, you should probably import them rather than take your chances on what is available to you here.
Just my individual history and perspective, advise you to get other perspectives before making a decision. Also, do some research so that you KNOW what you will be paying to import, including duties and stamp taxes in addition to shipping and brokerage fees.
Good luck!
