I am originally from the US, having moved to the UK 18 years ago. I have my UK nationalisation and carry a UK passport. My husband and our two children were all born in the UK.
Now that my husband's parents have passed away, we no longer have any family here in the UK. We are considering moving to the US. I'm sure myself and our children would have no problem obtaining US passports, but my husband is another matter, having no US ties whatsoever (apart from being married to me).
Before we can even consider the move, my husband wants reassurance that he would be able to find a job there. He is a fully qualified accountant, specialising in the motor industry.
Does he try to find a job first or should we try to move first? Would a company there consider hiring a UK citizen, knowing that there are plenty of qualified people there?
Just asking for some basic advice, please. No political comments.
Many thanks.

Hi Im a Brit now lving in USA. I got a work permit, but that was due to the unusual skills i jhave. Your husband hasnt a hope of getting work, . At the moment , unless he gets a B1 / B2 visa he can only stay in USA by getting an ESTA . he will have to , thro you get a CR1 ive just been thro this process. takes about 15 months. My wife is American and im retired . You need a good US attorney that specialises in this type of work, i can put you intouch with an excellent one if you wish. Once he gets his CR1 a green card follows in a few wks and he will become a resident, then he can work, he could apply in approx 3 yrs after apply for US citizenship and keep his British passport. Theres no short cuts. Good luck Robert

Thank you, bobbyveee, for your very helpful reply.
I wouldn't mind knowing your US immigration expert if you can pass on the details. I was just going to do a Google search, but any recommendation would be appreciated! :-)
Very kind regards.

As you are married and you are originally american your husband will be able to go with you with no problems and also get a visa, also as for you moving and your husband getting a job there its much better for your circumstances to move to usa first and then husband can get a job and being an accountant its a job which is looked upon as in demnd by employers. hope this helps abit if you need further advice please ask

Dand E You are wrong, im a Brit married to an American, without a green card i couldnt stay in USA for more than 6 months and without a green card and SS number you cant get work and nobody will employ you. Ive just been thro all this , getting my green card in Oct and now allowed to live in USA You shouldnt write advice on things you obviously havent a clue about. Its very confusing

You will need to go to the US embassy in London or wherever you are , so the non Americxan in your family can get a B1/B2 visa, this will allow you 6 months in the US , then you'll have to leave for 6 months, eventually you will have an interview at an American embassy of your choice , this is after spending about $4000 on an attorney and all the US gov forms you have to fill in, plus getting police records of wherever youve lived. You are an alien until you get a green card. The US citizen in your family will apply for a CR1 , you can read about that on line , its what your attorney will get you to fill in , takes over a yr. more like 18 months. Message me if you need more advice or a good US attorney based in NY. Robert. By the way we live in west central Florida

Does anyone know how I can get any kind of sponsorship, apart from immediate family?
I've been trying to get a breakthrough, but it's proving very difficult.
Thanks in advance.

Sponsorship was always difficult unless thro immediate family or ones job, but with the new president , going to be even harder. Anyone wanting to live in the US needs to marry an American and youve gotta stay married for atleast 3 yrs. or your going to get deported.

Thats useless advice, if an American can do your job you wont get a work visa. No American Co. is going to hire an unknown alien who can live or work in the USA. Since Trump got in even less chance

I strongly advise that your husband tries living in the USA prior to making plans to move there. It might all depend on your preferred destination. I lived in the USA for a year (in Texas) and absolutely hated it. Earlier I lived in San Francisco for three months and loved it, but that location is hardly affordable in these times.

Ive lived in many places in the US not on the west coast , never hated anywhere , we now live on the gulf coast in Florida on the Natural Coast and love it. Has everything we want. We are retired so can chose were we want to live, if your going to work in US you may not have that choice.

I would think that the family have spent time here already and how do you try living in a country with a wife and two kids and no income, not a very practical idea.

For your move, you should check out Furnishr.com. They will get your new home completely furnished in one day. Their designer creates a furniture package based on your style, apartment size and furniture needs. You just need to contact them 3-4 weeks before your move to make sure the furniture can get set up on the day you move.
