At this time of year, many new expats are living in temporary housing and actively looking for a house or apartment. Choosing the right town or city neighborhood is a big decision. Families, retirees and single expats often look for much different things! To help newcomers in your area narrow down the possibilities, we invite you to post a reply to this thread telling about your town, rural area or city neighborhood. Please begin your post by putting the name of your area/town/neighborhood in capital letters.

Here are a some suggestions for topics that you may want to cover when describing your area:

-- nearby schools? international schols?
-- do many expats live in the area?
-- activities for families or single expats?
-- proximity to city or areas where most expats work?
-- typical housing (sizes, costs, yards/no yards, etc.)
-- parks and recreation areas?
-- nightlife and restaurants?
-- safety and crime issues?
-- do you need a car?
-- basic amenities?

Thanks for helping new expats in your area!

Good morning Betsy,

I currently work as a contractor in IRAQ, I wish to live in Nepal within the year, or let's say next summer. I see you mentioned temporary housing. Is this like the military equivelent of it? Is this just to help give you a place to stay until you find a permenant location? See, my first trip there will be Feb. of 2009. I have fallen inlove with a wonderful man I met here while working in IRAQ and we are making plans on making a life together. He has no desire to live in the US and frankly, neither do I. I am a military brat so I am used to living abroad, my ex husband is retired military and my son loves new places and we all adjust great. My son is going to be 14 this summer and he is excellent in school and do not want him to lose that. But I want to make a life with this man as well. I really need your advice. I will have a better outlook in Feb. when I go but if temporary housing is available I can jump on that. I believe the best option for us would be to live in KTM so that I may find work. I would really like to work in the Embassy. If I need to work in IRAQ a while longer and go to Nepal on my R&R's then that's what I will do but I would like to have a home and job. My future lives in a village, BAGLUNG district but goes to Pokhara now and again to visit an Uncle who he helps at an electronics shop. I realize that I am the bulk bread winner and that doesn't bother me anymore than it does him, but he's never wanted anything from me, he wants to make a life with me and anything I want goes. I have posted on this website before but never a response. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME. Anything you can tell me will be better than nothing. I know I'm ready to leave IRAQ and begin my new life and new adventure in NEPAL. Also, could you please advise me on jobs, like I said I'm interested in the Embassy. If possible.
