Hello,
This is my first time posting and I have several questions that hopefully some of you can help with. I am currently living in Australia on a working holiday visa. I've met a Nepali man whom I plan to marry in the coming months and I'm looking for information on moving to Nepal. What is the procedure of obtaining a marriage license? If you are legally married to a Nepali what kind of visa are you granted and are you allowed to work on that visa? What kinds of jobs are available to Americans? What kinds of things did you find hard to adapt to once you arrived and in the first 6 months of adjusting to Nepali life? Any tips or information you can share is welcome.
Best to you!

Dear Rainselay,
If your married in Australia. Than you have to legalise your marriage here at the cdo office of your man's district. After that you can easily get a marriage visa at the visa counter in Kathmandu. The marriage visa lasts maximum 1 year and is 10 dollars a month. For multiple entry you have to pay extra. Can you work in Nepal. I am not sure if that is officially allowed. But once your here and you will find a job a working visa shouldn't be to difficult to obtain. A job however that pays good might be a bit difficult. Unless you have experience with working for NGO's. Other possibilties might be working in the tourism sector or beeing a english teacher at one of the private institutions here in Kathmandu. Last saturday a Belgium girl described adjusting in Nepal as follows. Don't have any expectations. Lots of patience and don't expect that anything will go the same as home. Most difficult of living in KTM might be the polution. After five years in Nepal i'm still many time suprised how things work here. But as long as you live a bit tucked away in a peacefull area. Live is good in Nepal. But it is a big change. Good Luck with this huge step.

I just met a French girl here in Nepal who married a Nepali man. She said yes she can work no problem. You do get a marriage visa that isnt very expensive. The key is you need to have your husband with you to get the marriage visa. The girl I met was unable to get her marriage visa renewed because her husband is spending time in France and not in Nepal. She is using a tourist visa that cost much more while she waits for him to return. They have been married for five years and he still needs to be there. I have been in Kathmandu for 8 months. The polution in the summer is out of control. There are somedays you dont even want to open the door to go outside. Everything is dirty. Your clothes turn your wash water brown even if you didnt think they were that dirty. The air is so full of dust and polution you feel like taking a shower three times a day. The most difficult part is the thinking of Nepali people. There is a very different way of thinking and doing everything. You may feel like jumping in and telling them a better way of doing something or maybe a way to save time or money but they don't want to change. Many times they don't care about the most efficient way because of the work got finished faster or uses fewer workers they wouldn't have anything to do.We joke about being on Nepali time. That means everything takes two to three times longer than if should. Also if a Nepali tells you they will be there in 15 minutes that translates to 45 minute to over an hour in Nepali time. One important thing to learn is everything has a system even when it looks like chaos. You just need to sit back and watch for a while and ask lots of questions. Don't be frustrated when Nepali people nod there head at every question even if they have no idea what you are talking about. You will soon be able to tell the difference between a nob and the cute head bobble they do to say yes. A nob is usually a sign they have no idea what you just said. The bobble means they understand and are saying yes. Have fun and watch for the small things that make this a beatiful place. If you get overwhelmed by the dirty and bad things its easy to miss the good.
