For many newcomers and those considering living in Nepal, access to quality medical care is a top priority. Please help those moving to your area by posting your experiences with the local health care system. Also, include any information about health insurance in Nepal. Be sure to post the name of your city, region or town.

I can only speak about my experience with health care in the mid-western tourist and trekking hub of Pokhara. Gate to the famous Annapurna Sanctuary, the trekking starting point for Mustang, Daulagiri, Muktinath and Annapurna Round Trek etc.
Pokhara has a great numbert of private clinics with low tariff annual family and individual's membership cards. Foreign Visitors, expats and middle class Nepalese are getting good and modern services in dental care, health check ups, trauma care etc. Depending on what ails you or your family member the costs are low and affordable. People have to pay directly. No Insurance card from abroad will help to pay a bill later on from home. A traveler has to claim refund from his/her insurance back home.
One pais for a dental membership card Nepalese Rupees 600 per year and between 800 and 1,500 per treatment or check up. Being hospitalized one has to think about 2,000 up to 4,000 Rupees per day. Medicine has to be paid separate. However Nepal made or Indian made antibiotics or any other drugs are generally 75 % cheaper than anywhere else. There is a good monitoring system about drug use in place in these private clinics and the pharmacists are operating with Government license. Many doctors in Pokhara's private clinics and hospitals are of Indian origin and provide modern and satisfying standard service. There is also an international standard Private University and Medical Research Institute in Pokhara. their service is a little more expensive. They may accept ones Health Insurance Card from abroad. Look it up in the Internet. It is called Manipal University Pokhara.
