Living in Nepal

I want to settle down here and as I research I am getting opposing comments on how to achieve this goal.

Is it true that you can stay past the 150 day visa as long as you pay $50 per month for visa extensions?

How do I go about settling here.

I have no business prospects and I am living on SS but here it goes a long way.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are no extensions after the 150 days per year. They are very strict about this. You may not have any business plans but that is the least expensive way to get a visa. You may also volunteer at a school and teach english. The school may pay your visa costs. I live here full time and am on a business visa. I would suggest you come here and figure out the visa during the five months on a tourist visa. I know that sounds like a bad answer but there is no way to do it before coming here unless you have a school you are working with that can handle the visa for you. I see you are on SSI. $500 a month will allow you to live here comfortably. I rent a 9 room house in a good area for 20k rupees so about $250 a month depending on the exchange rate. Now the rate is 80.5-1 dollar.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have been living in Pokhara for the past 4 months and will start the next 5 month period on January 1 which will bring me up to May.

I love the people here. I have been traveling for several years and this is a very uniques place to live.

How could I pass as a business visa. I have no money in the bank.

Any suggestions?

Jeff

Unfortunately it will take money to start a business. Right now the government is quick to approve training centers. English or computer training are the most common and easiest to get approved. Restuarants are also fast to be approved but require even more money for the start up. When going through the approval process you will need to state how much money you plan to invest but dont need to show it in your bank account until well after the approval. This means you will need a copy of your bank statement showing the amount of money you proposed to invest. If you need you can borrow the money for a short time and then return it. They dont track where it came from or if you keep it. Some Nepal banks will even loan you the money for a few days for a reasonable fee of a couple hundred dollars. Once you have your business approved you will have an inspection to see that your business is real. You should be opperating by the time they do the inspection. Like everything, offering a little money to the inspector makes things much easier. Dont try and to this without an attorney. For a standard business it will cost about $1200 for the attorney to do just about everythign for you. If it is a more complex plan the fee can go up. I would like to expand my business to Pohkara. maybe we should talk
