driving in nepal

Not sure if my information is correct or not but I read that there are no car rental agencies in Nepal where one could rent a car and drive yourself. Is this correct? If so (besides looking online) where does one find an affordable and reliable driver & car for more than just half or one day?

There are car rental companies that come with a driver. It will cost around $100 a day. You can rent a motorcycle or scooter(scooty) for about $9 a day. The problem with driving a car yourself is parking. If you are thinking of using a car in Kathmandu I suggest you not. Use taxis if the bus makes you uncomfortable. Buses can be tricky and very over loaded. If you look at the hotel sites like Yak and Yeti some have vehicles and prices. Once you are here it wont be hard to find a vehicle and driver. The price will come down if you work with local people. Depending on what size of car you need and where you are going it could come down a great deal. If you need help finding a private vehicle and driver contact me when you get here. I'll make some calls to friends who have them and would love the money.

thanks for the info. do you have a link or name of a place where i could rent a motorcycle once i land in Kathmandu? i was planning on driving around Nepal for a few weeks looking at different aid projects and also checking out some co-op fair trade opportunities. i thought a car would be more convenient compared to a motorcycle especially if i would want to bring back some sample items.

They rent motorcycles and scooters in Thamel. I don't know the name of the shops but it wont be hard to find, just ask around and you will find it quickly. They will try to charge you much more but talk them down to a good price. If you need to carry some items you may choose a scooty over a motorcycle. They have a flat area where your feet go. This area is used for carrying anything from bags of groceries to sitting a third and sometimes fourth kid. Be sure and get an International drivers permit. They cost $20 and you can get them at any AAA store. There is no test or anything. This simply is an add on to your current drivers license. They are good for a year after date of issue. There are police check points that may check. In most cases they see a foreigner and they wave you through the check point. I have been waved through everytime so far but I have friends that have been checked and given a hard time for only having a state license. I always have my permit and state license just in case. Also if you get stopped for doing something wrong its only a matter of time and you will be asked to pay and only after you pay will you be let go. The cost for a simple traffic mistake is only a few hundred rupees. If you get in an accident be sure you have some Nepali friend you can call for help. They will try and make you pay the other driver way more money than you should. It makes no difference who is at fault. A foreigner is a walking ATM in the eyes of the police and the other driver. With a Nepali friend there they can get the situation under control and settle it fast.
