Hi all, I am planning to move to Kathmandu within the next year, and was sizing up costs. This got me wondering, are there many domestic workers in Nepal, and what would they cost in general. I'm talking about someone to do cleaning and cooking etc., preferably live in. Is this at all feasible?

With around a 46% unemplyment rate there are many people willing and able to do this for you. Here they call a lady house keeper/care giver a didi. Your didi can make life much easier and is a good idea to have. For a day worker the rate would be about 6000 rupees a month. For a full time live in it would be a little higher at around 8000 a month including a room and all meals. Be careful who you hire. You need a person you can trust. There are many expats coming and going. It is common for them to advertise that their didi is in need of a new family. These workers have proven themselves trustworthy already. Hiring a friend or a friends sister is not a great idea. The minute you tell any person here you are in need of a did there will be tons of offers of wives and sisters etc. If there is a problem it makes solving that problem that much harder. I would hire someone for a month is all and tell them thats all it is and if they do good offer for them to move in a be full time. Bets of luck
