Its will take approximately $2000 to get your business plan approved by the government plus visa fees. This process will take about 6 months give or take. People will tell you different time frames but I have been through it twice and that's a good estimate. The minimum investment is now $50,000 to get a full business visa. You can start with less but within a year of approval you will need to show the full amount transferred into the business bank account. If you have a monthly income of some kind you can add that up over time to get to the $50,000. There is a court case on going about lowering the minimum investment back to the $20,000 it was a year ago. I doubt it will go all the way back down. They wont because it would show they made a mistake and wont ever agree to be shamed that way.. A restaurant can be good but rent is high in popular areas. Set up costs are usually higher than expected due to delays and cost of good here being different. English training centers are easy to start and have less set up costs. A guest house is a little more costly but easy to get approved. No matter what you will have to show the minimum investment. You can get here, get the approval, start the business without the full investment showing. This will get you two six month business visas. After that you will have to figure something out. You can change to a student visa or go back on a tourist visa for 5 months. Earning an income here is not easy. The government is not easy. The people are not easy to employ or to make contracts with. I have managed to open my guest house. It is very nice and is working but it took a great deal of time and money for that to happen. It is much easier to decide what to do once you are here. If you come at the end of the year you can use the 5 months at the end of the year and then get another 5 months in the new year on a tourist visa. This will give you up to 10 months to get a feel for what may be a good idea. Most people don't make it past the first 5 months and give up due to costs and visa issues. Don't be discouraged. This is normal but not necessarily you. You just have to hit the ground running researching and talking to expats not Nepalese. No disrespect intended but Nepali people will agree with anything you say and not always give you the best advice. No problem is the typical response even if you tell them you want to start a space program here. I actually did that once to a ministry official just to see if he would say the same thing as he did to all other ideas. Yes the response from him and two others in different high level positions was "no problem" I laughed each time. Stay in touch

I have a question for you. Let's say the $50k is set up as a loan therefore would need to be paid back, is it possible to remove money out of Nepal into another country? I've heard there are "issues" getting money out that the gov wants to keep $ in country.

the source of the money can be a loan from your home country. They simply look at the transfer on the bank statement of your Nepali business to see it was a foreign transfer. Getting the money out of the country is difficult. The government has restrictions. You are allowed to remove your investment/earnings money from the country one time as you exit the country to repatriate.

There are enough people out here who ' d go all the way in trying to deter new entrepreneurs from starting and running succesful businesses , just for the petty and disgraceful fact that they couldn't do it better. Nepal is a country with immense business potential , however, do not expect to find royal butler like staff to work in a 20k restaurant. A much bigger investment is required for a restaurant. You d be surprised with prices in better areas of Kathmandu.

But there are many other businesses where 20 k would provide enough capital to run a sustainable business.Education & English language centers top the list for me because they will provide you the platform to doing what you really want to. you can get a working visa to work as an English language instructor and slowly, you can work in partnership with them if things come together. I have a business of teaching English and student recruitment abroad. I am looking for a business partner myself to spearhead the Language& Test preparation unit and willing to collaborate on expat visa issues. Drop me a mail on info@celticnepal.com for any queries or concerns.Cheers.
