HI,

My family and I am are moving to Katmandu later this spring. We have many questions, but the current biggest one concerns the air pollution and what people do to protect themselves inside the house and on the street. Is anything effective?

Thank you

I didn't see any answers so I thought I would jump in. Kathmandu is a very polluted place. The air quality is one of the worst on the planet. Most people visiting develop a cough within a day or two and some have more serious issues. Most just get use to it and use a mask if needed. Many shops sell small colorful masks that are a sort of fashion thing in KTM. They cost about 25rs or 27 cents. These masks work a little and I do mean little. They are the most common but for filtering they are not good. There are other masks that work better but they are larger and look like that episode of Dr Who.."are you my mummy?" lol I suggest if someone is sensitive to the pollution they should try to live just outside KTM aka outside Ring Road. By going out just a short distance you can avoid some of the pollution. In the streets there really isn't much you can do but wear a mask, cover with a scarf, or hold your breath. In you house you can take some steps. I have screens on my windows that do act like filters keeping out some of the outside pollution. Keep the doors and windows closed when possible and do not live on a busy road. I use weather strip foam tape to help seal around doors and windows. Nepli doors and windows don't seal very good. Pollution is a difficult problem here and if you are going to live here you will just have to learn to live with it. The pollution particle get in everything and create a layer of dust on everything daily. Keeping the bedrooms clean and washing sheets and blankets gives the body a break while sleeping. Room air purifiers are not available at shops but I have seen some in homes. I think people import them. Make sure you get one with a washable filter. Good luck
