Moving to Nepal

Dear Forum Readers!

I would like to ask several questions about moving to Nepal. I would like to move there with my family and we have a 8 year old little girl with us. We would come from Hungary. Currently I work online as a System Administrator for Medium / Big enterprises in the US.

- What kind of Visa do we need to live there for more then one year?
- How much does the British School cost around there?
- How much does a good apartment cost for 3 person with Good Internet connection?
- How dangerous is Nepal?
- Does people speak English around there?

I don't know too much about Nepal but I really like the area. I'm serious about my thoughts, so if you can give me any advice I would really appreciate it.

The answers depend on what you want to do here and how long you really want to stay. A business visa is a common visa for long time expats. You can get a humanitarian/social worker visa with an NGO or you could volunteer at a local school. The humanitarian visa is not easy to get and you need an NGO to help you. Most will ask for money to help. Your choice of visas depends on if you need to make an income or if you already have enough money to live on. School are very different than in the US. Most have a very low performance level. Lincoln School in Kathmandu is good but costs about $17,000 per year. KISC is another good school and costs around $700 per month. These are estimates but are close. Typical local school are not a good idea for a foreigner coming from a more developed country. There may be other options that I am not aware of. Many school require the students to speak only English. In the cities there are many people who speak English.Internet is not fast in Nepal. You can get set up for between $100 and $200 depending on the company and the monthly is 800rs to 4000rs. You can see plans on a few company websites. Classic Tech, Broadlink, World Link, and many more. Speeds will be around 512kbps on average unless you spend a lot more per month. The wireless systems are nice because some can work around the city like on your mobile. Broadlink is one that can do that. Nepal has times when it gets dangerous. Politically its very unstable. Protests/strikes/bandas are common. The country is calm now but the calm will not last. When this happens you can avoid those areas or just stay home until its over. Crime depends on the area. Like most cities its not good to be walking around at night alone. Many areas are not bad even at night but still don't walk alone if you have a choice. Police response to a problem is limited if at all. The best plan is to avoid trouble but staying in groups in unknown areas at night time. Day time there is little risk. You can walk nearly all the city alone in the day time without an issue. I would suggest you take a vacation here first to learn more before making a full relocation here.

Thank you very much, I will consider to visit first. Though if the school performance is low I'm afraid I cannot go there. The most important thing is the little girl :)
