" My husband and I are looking as possibly relocating our family of 4 to New Zealand. We have been trying to find out the cost of living so we can know what kind of salary to ask for/accept. We have found a site that has homes for sale, but nothing that tells us what the price of utilities, food, and other every day living expenses would be. Can anyone help us? We do know that Aukland, Wellington and Christchurch are the most expensive places to live, but not much beyond that. Thank you for your time and information. "

" Marjorie, There is plenty of information on immigrating to NZ available on the internet... Cost of living can vary considerably between the big cities and smaller towns. Here are a couple of addresses that you might find helpful http://www.peg.apc.org/~globenz/immigration/index.htm www.immigration.govt.nz I''m a native New Zealander and more than happy to answer any specific queries you may have. I think its a great country!!! Good luck with your researching Natalie "

" Natalie Thank you for your help. That link did have quite a bit of information. I do still have a couple more questions if you don''t mind. 1. I noticed that dogs need to be quaretined but could not find out for how long? do you know as we do have a dog. 2. What is an average cost of every day living there? i.e. food, gas (per gallon/liter), utilities, education (we have 2 boys), homeowners/auto insurance, etc. Thank you so much for your help. From what we''ve seen and heard, New Zealand is a beautiful place and we are very much looking forward to the possiblity of moving there. Marjorie Hudson "

" Hi Marjorie I''m a Kiwi, so I can tell you a few things! I originally come from the Christchurch area, so my knowledge is based mostly on that. Firstly, Auckland and Wellington are more expensive than Christchurch to live. In Christchurch itself, there are many rental properties available for short-term and long-term. ""The Press"" is the local newspaper and the best days to find accomodation are on Wednesday and Saturday editions. There are also a lot of rental agencies - just pop along to a real estate agency and let them know what you want. Price-wise, you''ll be looking at between $200 (NZD) and upwards per week depending on the area (there are good, very good, and not-so-good places). An indication of living expenses are as follows for a family of four (in New Zealand dollars): Food $130 upwards (depending on children''s ages and how well you want to eat - you can get away with paying cheaper) Phone $40 rental per month, local and national charges are reasonable; two main phone companies (Telecom and Clear) Power $120 (approx only!!!) upwards per month; again depending on kids, etc Petrol $0.92 cents per litre Hope this helps - if you need anything more specific, just let me know. " Thank you to everyone who wrote us with info about New Zealand. It was very useful. My husband was just offered a job here in the states that we couldn''t turn down, so we have decided to stay. We would at least like to visit New Zealand one day, and maybe move there, but not right now. Thanks again. "

" My wife has just accepted a job in NZ and we''ll be moving to Christchurch in August. We, too, are looking for information about the area. If anyone has the time to write us, we''re needing to know what areas of town are clean, safe and relatively affordable to rent or buy in. Other questions, as well, but won''t get into those right now. We''ll be in the St. Albans area and would like something close if it''s a good neighborhood and relatively inexpensive. Hoping to avoid using a car too much since petrol is so expensive. We''re looking for a one or two bedroom...house or apt. It''s just the two of us, so we don''t mind on the small side. Also looking for any other tips or pointers for newcomers. Thanks in advance to anyone who can spare the time to write. Case "
