" We are a family of 3 who know very little of New Zealand but are interested in a new lifestyle. My first question is about race relations. I am white, my wife is African-American and my son of 4 is a mix. Could that possibly be a source of concern? Here in California, our socioeconomic status more than race has determined how we are treated. We''re both teachers (ages 9-12) and wondering about availability of jobs and rental property until we check out the area to buy. Since we have no roots set in New Zealand, would you recommend the Nelson area or an alternate locale for settling? We are looking for a quiet, natural setting, moderate climate with possibilities of new friendships. "

" Hi there, There is a great web site dedicated to teaching in NZ, it covers all aspects of NZ schools and even includes information on overseas teachers now working there. http://www.teachnz.govt.nz/ The NZ Government over the last couple of years has really encouraged overseas teachers to come out to NZ due to a teacher shortage. Those that have moved seem to be very positive however have had to adapt to the cultural differences... NZ classrooms tend to be very multi cultural and these requires special teaching techniques Good luck Natalie "
