Hello,
Me and my partner are looking to move to NZ and was wondering if anyone knew whether we could get the visa whilst in NZ or if we need to apply outside of NZ? Also what type of visa options there are?
Many thanks
Serina

Hi Serina

If you are ot a NZ citizen then you need to get a visa beore you arrive in NZ. Most countries can get a holiday visa on entry to NZ [but you need to check]. If you arrive on a holiday visa with the intention to convert to a work or residential visa....you will find it very difficult - and also you may not be allowed to enter the country. Do your homework before leaving for NZ....make an appointment with the NZ embassy in your country to find out the facts!

Good luck

in 2003 when I went there I found NZ visa process the easiest of any country I applied to. A US citizen, I entered the country as a tourist without special visa requirement. I found work in a "listed profession" within a week and with the employment verification in had I went to the immigration office in Wellington and had a 5 year work permit in an hour. You do have to meet a number of education and background requirements but if you are a professional with a work history it's not a problem. When I moved to the UK in 1995 I had to go through 6 months of paperwork including getting a letter from an MP to get a work permit. The regulations change almost yearly so go to the NZ immigration site to see what professions are on the list and what the current requirements are.

go to:http://www.newzealand.com/int/visas-and-immigration
as a good authoritative starting point.
Age, health, and whether you have skills that are needed are all take into consideration. Good luck!

Boy are you lucky!!! I had a job committment at a tertiary insitution here in NZ, and as a US citizen (almost 20 years ago) I had to provide police checks, work records, health records and all in all the process took a good 6 months and I was waiting at LAX for my passport even then. And that was for a permanent residency. I got citizenship a few years later which was a piece of cake by comparison. We have several international students who have to go through hoops when they return to NZ each semester so your story is, I would say, in my experience, quite rare!
