Hi there,

My partner and I are flying out in September from UK on a year working holiday visa and we were wondering if you guys could give some advice.

We have a few nights booked into a hostel in Auckland but after that we have nothing set. We both have experience in hospitality work and primarily in theatre with my partner being a sound designer and myself with venue management experience.

-What is the best way to get jobs when we arrive?
-What is the best way to sort out accommodation in NZ? Should we organise this early on before we leave UK?
-Best places to go and live/work?
-Things to watch out for before or when we arrive?

Thank you, I appreciate any help.

:)
James

Hi James
So many questions, not sure I can answer all of them. Auckland or Wellington will be your two best bets when it comes to finding work in the theatre or arts sectors, Both cities offer plentiful hospitality sector jobs. Seek.co.nz might be worth checking out for potential jobs / contacts in the arts sector. For hospitality jobs, word of mouth and/or personally visiting the places you might like to work & ask for a job might be the fastest & most direct route to success. Your one year working holiday visa is the passport to getting any work in NZ so be sure to be upfront about your legal work status when job hunting. You would be advised to arrive in NZ first and then seek out accommodation, In Auckland you might consider house=share options, offering private, furnished bedrooms and shared living / bathroom / kitchen facilities, almost always located in central auckland suburbs. This might be a good short term option for you. www.walkerweir.co.nz are small & professional property rental group I can recommend. They have house share rentals & private apartments / homes for rent. nzherald.co.nz or www.trademe.co.nz are good sites for hunting rental accommodation that you might like to check out. Good luck & enjoy your year down in NZ.
