Moving to Norway

Our family may be moving to the Oslo area due to a job transfer. I would like to know what types of activities would be available for an American teen - 15 year old - so we can decide if we want to accept the job. He is currently being homeschooled in the US, but is involved in lots of activities like church youth group, Boy Scouts, etc. and I am concerned about the transition for him. Also, how expensive is housing for a family and how nice/well-equipped is the housing? Gas prices? Types of cars to buy? Thanks so much!

Hi,
My husband and I lived in Stavanger, Norway for nearly five years. It was a great place to live, and I think you and your family would certainly love it! Oslo is a more international European city, and it is very nice! I'm sure with church, scouting and school activities, your son would soon meet up with some new friends, and grow a tremendous amount from the experiences he could have there.
With a job transfer to Norway, you would definitely want to be well paid, as the cost of living is very high. Housing and education allowances, and cost of living adjustments would be in your best interest to try negotiate. Gas is about three times the price, housing is expensive, as are groceries, utilities, cars, clothes, etc.
Have a look at SPIN.no for a very good website on living in Stavanger, Norway. It may give you some insight into moving there.
Good luck!
Lori

I moved to Norway from Calif. about 5 years ago. If had to do it over again I would have moved to Oslo. I live on the west coast near Stavanger. You won't find homeschooling here and if you are planning to move back in a short time I would NOT put him into Norwegian schools. I can only tell you from my experience it's terrible, however, Oslo should be much better. I thought it would be good to integrate my kids into the Norwegian culture asap but quite frankly the teachers on the elementry level were the worst I have ever encountered and they just do not have the resources or the experience with expat kids. I am not trying to paint a grim picture. I think in your sitution depending on the type of business your husband is involved with, i.e. oil, they will usually pay for the housing and the schooling, which is a pretty nice deal. Find an International School there are plenty in Oslo. If you want to talk live visit my website: http://www.immunewise.com and we can have a voice chat.
