Permit Times/UDI

Hi Everyone,

I have just recently come across this forum and found some useful information. I am wondering if I can please ask some of your experiences with processing times for permits. I have applied for family immigration with my husband who is a Norwegian citizen, I am American. We applied and provided all documents about two months ago, but have yet to hear anything. I am just wondering if anyone has recently applied for family immigration and what your experience with the processing times (especially anyone coming from the US) has been. I am so anxious to be reunited with my husband, as he is already there. Thank you for your time.

Best Regards,
Steph

Hi Steph,

If you have supplied alle the required certified documents, there should be no need to worry. Your husband should inquire at the immigration at the local police station to get an answer.

Don't listen to the negative few who pester this forum with their personal sorry stories (although you may encounter some real problems and slow handling of cases in Norway as everywhere in the world).

Best wishes,
Olav

Thank you Olav, for your response. My husband did inquire, and although our application is still "in process", we were able to find out some further good information. Most importantly that I am able to relocate to Norway, and wait out any remaining time, I will just be limited of course until everything is completed.

Yes indeed Steph, do NOT listen to the negative posts in here at all. As long as you had all your paperwork in complete order then everything should go through just fine. It really all depends on whether it can be completed in your kommune or has to be sent off to Oslo as to how long it can take. I was lucky that we had all paperwork in order and kongsvinger was right on top of things to varifying everything, so I got mine in less than 3 months. keep your head up and a positive attitude ;)

Oh and btw, why on earth didn't you come with him or come and then apply? You didn't need to be aprt at all being you were already married. I came on a tourist visa and we applied while i was here and was allowed to stay through the process NP.

To StephA and Tazzbaby: My wife and I just had six years anniversary since she arrived in Norway in April 2006 for marriage.
We had excellent advice from a senior lady at the embassy in Hanoi, and since we had our engagement party and "marriage" ceremony already in Saigon in December 2005, we received the OK and visa in three weeks after submitting all the documents. That was record time, maybe, for a fiancee visa, so handling time varies. I am happy to learn that StephA; you can relocate already. Good luck :-)

@Dkiller
For one thing you don't know me from adam, I worked from the time I was 14 years old mister DRAMA QUEEN! So riding systems is something maybe you yourself are prone to do, not me nor my husband. As for you not gaining anything from shooting your trap off? HA! DRAMA QUEENS gain everything from posting forums because they thrive on ATTENTION period! We call them TROLLS.

@Steph, hon all I can say is people such as that simply thrive on trying to make others miserable like themselves, it's lonesome in the gutter if ya know what I mean ;)
Some of us choose to rise above those sad depths and enjoy what life has to offer us. I do miss my family very much, but life here in Norway is a pleasant change, as the US has lost track of what is important, family, health and safety. The economy is at it's absolute worst, there are near no jobs and no job security whatsoever. And to most employers you are just a despensible number sadly.

No Norway isn't perfect and neither is anywhere else on this planet, but life here is great no matter what trolls say. It's what you make it no matter where you are hon, keep a positive attitude and take the innitiative to get to know people around you here, you won't be disappointed ;)

Yes, I have actually spent a lot of time in Norway. My husband and I are looking forward to the slower paced life after living for so long here in Los Angeles. We know that Norway is the better place for us to continue to grow our family. Maybe not for everyone, but for us definitely. In two short months I will be on that plane, and I am so excited. Just in time for summer! I guess it seems silly I didn't go sooner, but I am just finishing my AA Degree, which I wanted to do here with hopes of contiuing my education over there, and also because my daughter was in school. Otherwise, we would have done it that way. What part of Norway are you in? We are moving to Stavanger :)

Well I am living in Kongsvinger now which is about 1 hour 15 minutes NE of Oslo. But my husband will hopefully be returning to school to get his degree in automatics in order to gain employment as a ROV operator which will have us moving to Haugesund hopefully, and Stavanger is his 2nd choice of school. So we should keep in touch ;)

for one thing get your freaking facts straight. In the US one only gets 6 weeks total maternity leave (including before birth leave) and that is only if one has those benefits! And anything over that even with a doctors excuse, puts one at risk of losing said job! So daycare and babysitters are immediate unless ones spouse makes a fortune to enable the mother to stay at home, which is very far and few between. And there is certainly NO pay during this leave! And a father getting leave there? Almost unheard of!
I haven't got a clue wtf you even talk about with drinking, I don't know a single parent in all of Kongsvinger, Fyresdal, Skein (we have tons of family and friends all places) that drinks or goes to flipping pubs while their kids are in daycare. They all have jobs and work hard to provide for their families and spend their off time enjoying their families! Maybe you only know drunks because no one else wants anything to do with the likes of you!
As for leech? I get nothing from Norway nor does my husband for me. He works his ass off and supports the both of us until I am able to speak fluently to work myself! Only leech I see is you leeching off people who actually have lives and good ones at that! You might try getting one of those so called LIVES! I am done feeding you troll, so take you sorry ass somewhere where someone actually gives a damn what you have to say!

So sorry you have been exposed to this Steph, feel free to pm me hon and I will give you my email, ok? And Thank you Olav for being a positive force in here ;) good day!

StephA,

Maybe not relevant for you, but the latest report from Save The Children on how mothers (and children) fare in different countries may be interesting reading: http://www.savethechildren.org/atf/cf/%7B9def2ebe-10ae-432c-9bd0-df91d2eba74a%7D/STATE-OF-THE-WORLDS-MOTHERS-REPORT-2012-FINAL.PDF
A lot of interesting data on many subjects.

Hi StephA,

Congrats with coming to Stavanger!! I have lived here for just over a year and had many of the same concerns as you. I am Canadian and married with a Norwegian. We applied for my Family Immigration/ Reunification Permit in May 2011, and Finally received approval in December 2011. Unfortunately, the process can take quite a while. In my experience of applying for 3 separate permits in norway, including rejections, appeals and so forth, the processing time stated on UDI are relatively accurate (give or take a month). If all your paperwork is in order, everything should be fine. It's the continuous back and forth with forms and misleading information that causes delays. I can only suggest that you or your husband call UDI on a weekly basis. Insure all paperwork is in order and that your file is actually sitting with a case worker. An american friend of mine (married to a norwegian also) was delayed with receiving her FIP because UDI had "misplaced" her file.. It turned out, they had filed it under the wrong name :S BUT, on a brighter note, once you receive your permit, it's easy sailing there after. You need only go to Skattvest where you will apply for your "fødselsnummer" (social security number) and some other forms which i cannot recall at the moment. Then off to the local police station with your passport where they will take a photo, and stamp your passport.! THEN you are officially a resident of Norway. Stavanger is a really beautiful place, i'm sure you will enjoy it!!

P.S: Be sure to check out the "Sjokoladepiken" (the chocolate girl) cafe! They have the best latte's and caps and homemade chocolates i have ever tasted, nestled away in a HOT Pink butikk!! You can't miss it! :D

Hi everyone, I would appreciate if you could share with me regarding the following situation: my husband is going to study 2 years in Norway(Master Degree), student permit has been obtained already. I have applied for family reunification and got an email from UDI confirming our case registration and saying that approval will take up to 9 months. My question is: if we hire a Norwegian lawyer, will it speed up the process of our case consideration by UDI or it is just a waste of time and money? Thank you very much in advance.

Sorry to tell you this hon,but don't waste your time or money. But as far as I know, you could have come along with him and applied when you got her, and they would have allowed you to stay during the process. But now that you have already applied, you cannot enter Norway at all during the process, even for just a visit sadly. That is the rules.Believe me that when I tell you I feel for you, I mean I have been through the sad 9 month long separations myself, twice and it is heart breaking. Just talk on skype daily and it will ease the pain a bit, and time will go by much faster that way. Make sure all your paperwork is in order and that you gave them all required documents, I wish you luck and hope things go well for you.

Hi Tazzbaby, thank you very much for your prompt reply and empathy. In fact my idea about the lawyer was the same as yours but my husband is worried and he is searching all possible opportunities to speed up the process. Since we are not familiar with the Norwegian system we have to check our assumptions with knowledgeable people like you. Would you please advise us, in case if we will not hear from UDI for more than 2-3 months, should we contact them occasionally to inquire about our case? If yes, how often we should do it in order not to make the situation worse? Thank you in advance.

@Vita.....I don't think there is any way to speed up the process hon,it really would have been better had you come with him and then apply, then you could have waited here during the process. As for keeping on it, I would say maybe every 2 or 3 weeks to make sure your papers aren't misplaced, etc.....

I know it will be hard being apart for 9 months but likeI said, take full advantage of free skype where you can video chat as long as you like, it really helps. My hubby and I had to endure two 9 month long separations as well as a 5 month long one, so I definitely know where you are.

But if we could get through all that, you will be fine hon ;) My hubby is Norwegian and I am American, but we married stateside so that I would have it much easier to come here. Are you planning on moving here permanently, or just while he is a student?

Thanks for your support Tazzbaby, it's a pretty valuable for me now. Unfortunately we are not under category of people who are allowed to wait for an answer in Norway, so it seems that we don't have that much choice as to be just patient. Some other people say that usually 9 months is a maximum deadline for case consideration but sometimes UDI approves earlier than that. I don't know, I do pray for miracle to happen :-) By the way, so far we are planning to move to Norway only while he is student but life is so unpredictable that nobody knows how plans will be changed later. Tazzbaby thank you very much again for your time and attention to my concerns.

HI Steph. I see you have already gotten some great advice. As others said, if all your paperwork was in order, there should be no issues. I am from Canada, and as I'm sure you know, not being from an EU country has some different rules. 2 years ago my Family Immigration Permit took 9 months to be approved. But luckily I applied from within Norway, and was able to stay with my Norwegian husband during the wait. The only advice I can give is to follow up every month or so. It doesnt hurt to confirm and RE-confirm that everything is in order. It has been known that paperwork does get misplaced. Good luck!!

Hi mamaprase, to answer your question. The rules in Norway are that once you begin the process depends on where you applied. If you applied inside of Norway, you cannot set foot outside of Norway until you receive your residency permit. If you leave you will automatically forfeit the process. Now if you apply outside of Norway then you will not be able to enter Norway during the process at all, and again if you do you forfeit the process. As for returning to your home country, I am not sure if that is possible even if you applied outside Norway, you would have to search the rules thoroughly. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't make any moves until you have those papers in hand, good luck

Just want to provide some further info here for others who may read this:
While tazzbaby's response is probably correct for mamaprase, it doesn't apply to everyone. It depends on which country you are from. If you don't need a visa to enter Norway in the first place (under the Schengen agreement for example) then you can apply for family reunification from outside Norway and then enter Norway afterwards. I'm Australian, and I've just done this last week. I just made sure I got it in writing from UDI before applying.

Annie, this is the AWFUL "Catch 22" situation you risk when going to any country. IF your permit application is not processed promptly and you have no right to be in Norway for a certain period because you are EU Citizen for example or there is a bilateral treaty between your native country and Norway, you risk over-staying the time you are allowed to be in Norway and either leave ... so you don't break the law by over-staying but then have to start the Visa process all over again OR you stay and wait for the permit to be decided ... in the meantime you have broken the law and become yet another statistic the media can use in a story about all the "bad foreigners flooding our country" .... and it's not just Norway of course. Try and do everything in writing and abide by the rules strictly. If you must be in Norway beyond a certain date, write to UDI and tell them if the case is not settled by a certain date you will have to repatriate yourself to avoid breaking Norwegian immigration law.

I have no criminal record anywhere but, here's an example .... and remember, I am a white Englishman ... I have bought LOADS of laptops from shops in the UK and a couple at least in Norway plus a desktop PC. When a laptop was stolen from a shop I'd visited in Norway, I was investigated by the police but not prosecuted due to "lack of evidence". I'm sure the shops in the UK from which I have bought laptops have had laptops stolen from them. I wonder why the Brirish didn't suspect me of being the culprit?

I DO hope everything works out fine for you Annie. In the UK there are tens of thousands of applications in bags in ministry store rooms apparently. Google it! The simple fact is systems don't always work no matter what you do. I think foreigners are actually MORE careful about obeying the law because they CAN be thrown out of the country. It's just the weaknesses in systems that ends up "criminalising them" when they are put in impossible Kafkaesque situations.

Good luck Annie. Don't get depressed. there's still a whole world full of happy people and places out there!!
