Hi!
I wonder if you can help! It appears plenty of people appear to be asking the same question! Sorry to be another statistic but I am looking to relocate to Muscat in January 06. My boyfriend is working in Muscat and in a nutshell, and being romantics at heart, we want to be together(he is American therefore not much good on what needs to be done from Blighty!)!
Having lived in Yorkshire for most of my life its a big step and I am already receiving different reports of which visa to get! I have already visited Muscat and am familiar with how the land lies there. Any advice on visas, finding work (i know you need a sponsor but if anyone knows of any good websites), health insurance, medical, banking (do i need to change bank accounts to one over there), the tax (never lived abroad before and have no idea whether i can just up sticks and go!) and a list of the basics i need to prepare/organise before i go!
I understand i am asking for alot - your help and guidance is much appreciated!
Jo

Hi Jo,
one thing i can answer: there are no taxes, which is good. As for the visa, you either need a job to get a visa or you marry your boyfriend and be on his visa, which is easier, but i understand that one wants a more romantic reason than a visa for marriage ;).

I heard, that there is always a need for english teachers, but there is something called omanization, which means preferably omanis will be hired rather than expats, which makes it a bit difficult in some fields. What is you qualification anyway?
Hm, actually i cannot answer so many of your questions, because all the insurance, bank and medical issues are provided through the company of my husband.

My advice to you is contact the british embassy in muscat:
http://www.britishembassy.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1025870055971 (don´t know why this is such a long link)
and further sign up for an international health insurance in the UK.

I think to open a bank account you need a job first and a salary certificate. For the beginning you can just use your credit card or cash card, which works on the cash-machines here.

Hope i could help you a little bit. Good luck and contact me when you are here at sousann@gmx.de

Hi Rainbow and indeed by now Jo!
I am now the next statistic to relocate to Muscat..we are all at it following our men it seems..mine is Omani. I just wanted to know if either/both of you are out there now living as it would be great to meet some new friends when i come out at end of April?

I have a few questions for Muscat:
You said get an international health insurance in the UK..is this still necessary as i heard the health was good out there..is it not worth getting national health or does it not work out there?

There are no taxes right so are you saying that on your salary a month you pay ZERO out to the authorities apart from bills and rent? Seems incredible to me..hard to beleive?!!

What do ladies do in the evenings if they have no kids and want to go out with/without their other halves to socialise? I have ever only been to male dominated bars and i know this is the case in the MIddle East but you all must be going out drinking somewhere in one of the big hotels? Which are the best?

Are there are any areas to avoid living in Muscat and Greater Muscat..i think we were thinking about near Seeb? What is this like?

Re..driving licenses..do i have to get an international one or can i just drive on my UK one? Is this something i do before i come to Oman?

Do you have to register with anyone in Oman apart from your visa to say you are there? ie, british embassy, etc? ( in france i had to thats why i ask!!)

Do you know where i can get beginner Arabic classes that are excellent and can get me talking almost straight away.dont just want to do it for the sake of it but use it in everyday business? Around Muscat i mean of course?

What about clubs, dancing, pilates, etc..any of thoses anywhere? Are there any clubs for expat women etc to meet and catch up on stuff?

Sorry about the millions of questions..this is not just directed at rainbow and Jo so if anyone else is reading this and can answer of my questions, i woud be most grateful!!
