A future move to Masirah Oman in May is looking to be in the very near future. I would like to know what services are available for cell phones and internet. Can I pick up a wifi connection on my laptop. Should I buy a cell phone over there or just use pre paid phone cards? Please any information on these topics would be greatly appreciated.

I was in Oman about two years ago. What I would is if you have a gsm phone, blackberry take it with you over there, but you will need an outlet specifically from the Middle East.

As far as phone cards...from Oman Mobile I think work best. Get them in denominiations of (I think they are ten r.o. (Omani Riyals.) There is also Nawras phone service, but they will take you a while. First, one has to to obtain your residency card and then your phone line....There are Oman Mobile sites at the shopping malls in Seeb, in Muscat, Al Khaywr, Al Khoud, Qurum. Mediniat Qaboos, etc.

Where exactly are you staying in Oman again?

I have just got back from Muscat, and there are some options for you depending on how you intend to use the phone. I got myself a SIM card from Omantel for OR3 (inclusive of (OR1 call time) and you can just buy phone cards to top up your credit from most stores like garages and supermarkets around Muscat. Omantel has an excellent network and they also do mobile broadband. Very handy if you're out and about a lot. I suggest you check their website out as they have special offers throughout the year.
For international calls, there is another mobile phone company that sells cheaper airtime, Friendi. They have stalls in most major shopping malls, and you can also check out their website. They sell SIM cards for OR2 and it includes OR1 talk time and some free SMS txts. I got myself one just for making international calls, however, the lines aren't as clear as Omantel, and there is a beeping sound every few minutes, as if to remind you to get off the phone. However, it is good value for money and it still does the job.
So, if you have any questions on either of them, just go to their websites. I have no idea about Nawras (another mobile phone company in Oman, you could also check their website to see what they have to offer.
