RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS IN PANAMA
Temporary visitors, such as: - Foreigners visiting relatives for no more than 9 months, - Patients undergoing treatment at Panama health clinics, - Missionaries, - Specialized Technician or Worker - Executives of Colon Free Zone and Export Processing Zones companies and regional headquarters, - Panama Canal workers, - Technicians, researchers and students of the City of Knowledge, - Technicians not exceeding 15% of the payroll of all other Panama businesses, may reside in Panama upon filing with the immigration authorities their labour contracts, good conduct certificates, and other personal documents.
Permanent Residency is granted to foreigners: - Agricultural workers residing outside of the provinces of Panama and Colon, - Foreign spouses of Panamanian nationals, - Owners of US$40,000 (up from US$10,000 in Oct. 2003) in shares of Panama companies employing at least 3 Panamanian workers - Owners of US$40,000 in securities of accredited forestry companies, - Owners of a US$100,000, 2-year certificate of deposit from a Panama bank (or half said amount and US$50,000 in Panama Government bonds) - Owners of US$250,000 in shares of companies in export processing zones, - Representatives of foreign companies with less than 10 workers in Panama, - Permanent workers for Panamanian companies not exceeding 10% of their payroll, may acquire the category of permanent immigrants.
Pensioner Visas are granted to foreigners: 1) Holding a US$120,000 CD in the Panama National Bank yielding US$750.00 monthly for 5 years, 2) Earning a pension from a social security or any foreign government pension authority above US$500.00 monthly.
Cost for the visa is of up to US$2,500 plus US$900 for renewals, if applicable, and any repatriation deposit (US$100.00), stamp or other expenses.
Citizens from East Europe, Asia (except Japan) and Africa must be previously authorized by the National Security Council BEFORE entering the country. The Council may deny entry to persons it may feel are not bona fide visitors.
ALL applicants must provide a Police background certificate authenticated by Panama Consul or with Apostille and provide satisfactory references.
Residents earning income from Panama sources (except bank accounts in Panama or securities from Panama public companies) must pay Panama income taxes on said income.
