My family is retiring to Panama (Bocas del Toro) this coming year (August, 2004). I hear that I will need to hire a lawyer soon to begin the maze of paperwork required to obtain visas, ship goods, etc. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced, but competent, lawyer that I can hire for this purpose? Is hiring a lawyer the only way to go? What should I expect to pay and how long will it take? What other questions should I be asking?
Thanks!

You should contact: Greg Geurin, who runs the International Living Office in Panama, to this e-mail: panama@internationalliving.com or go to this site to get more information: http://www.internationalliving.com/panama/

Hi! We had a great lawyer to cut through all of the paperwork and get our "pensionado visa". She had us do a lot of the paperwork here in the U.S. and then once we had everything we flew into Panama City and she took us to immigration (we spent MAYBE 1 hour there) and the paperwork took a week to go through the channels. We left the country to come home and then the next time we were down to Panama City she took us back to the immigration office and had our pictures taken for the visa. That time we spent maybe 1/2 hour.
Our next step will be when we ship our container down there she will have all of the paperwork ready to meet the "container" and customs.
It is the only way to go from what we understand.
Contact me through my website: http://www.whypanama.com and I will put her intouch with you.
She was very reasonable!!!
Mary

Since you are planning to move to Bocas you should ask questions to someone already living there. There are several internet groups that do question and answer chats specific to that area. Panbocas with Yahoo Groups is one that I know of. Members there could probably direct you to other groups for resident expats in Bocas.

Greg Geurin is not an attorney.
A brief list of requirements appears at http://www.expatexchange.net/expat/index.cfm?frmid=270&forumid=0&tpcid=270007&dbname=ee&shared=N
