My wife and I are travelling to Panama very soon for a week to have an initial "look-see" for retirement purposes. We are also looking at the DR as a possibility BUT we've never been to either country...yet. Has anyone considered both, and if so, why did you settle on Panama? I'm not sure we're Boca, David type people or exactly what at this point. Any information you can share would so greatly appreciated. For those of you that initiated this forum, thank you. Extremely useful, and thanks for any response you can share.

Hi there -- Your question was a right on hit for me. Did you ever get any answers? If not, I'd be interested in your thoughts/conclusions based on your explorations/ visit to Panama. Cheers, jazzbuff

Hello -- I have been to both countries. While the DR is very beautiful, Panama is much more "first-world" if that is important to you. I believe that is partially because of the amount of international business conducted there, thanks to the Canal, and partially because of the presence of the Americans in the country for so long. Panama City is the only Latin American city I'm aware where you can actually drink the tapwater. Another consideration is Panama's retiree program, which is quite generous. Panama also has all the great eco-stype stuff Costa Rica is famous for, they just haven't spent the money on advertising it world-wide the way CR has. I have a fair bit of info on Panama, feel free to email me at clubgmm@outgun.com if you want me to forward some.

Hi I am planning on moving there, not for retirement purposes because I am only 28, but I would like to live there because my father is moving there this year, so I have two girls and I need to know about schools and life over there because they are used to the american way of life, even if I am cuban myself. Please, let me know on your american perspective, how you found the country itself. Thank you.

While I am not so interested in the DR, my wife and I am seriously thinking about retiring to Panama. Our interests are in both Bocas and Boquete. I prefer the cooler mountain climate, with ready access to the beaches. Can you make some comments? I am also concerned about medical care there. I am a heart attack victim though I seem to be doing well now. I'll soon be eligible for medicare, do I get a special coverage for out of the country problems? Thanks!!!!

I have one word for you: HURRICANES!
Look at how many go to DR, versus how many go to Panama.
All other things being equal, hurricanes would decide for me. But even if DR had an edge, I would still go with Panama as the storms are getting bigger and stronger and in DR you won't have the support and rescue you would need to survive.
Just my dos centavos.
