I'm a single mom with one child wanting to move to Panama. I have dual citizenship. I currently have my cedula and am registered as a Panamanian Citizen. My spanish is limited but I can get by.

My problem is, I have a pension plan but I'm not old enough to retire therefore I'm wondering what are my chances of getting employment there.

I also need to be able to pay for schooling for my child who will be 12. I have a home already in Vera Cruz just need to be able to earn a living.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks

In your case, I would expect your chances of employment are excellent. You are a Panamanian with fluent English. Some opportunities for you would be in the American Consulate, for any one of the English language centers here, for the call centers that are now here and possibly privately, but I don't know about that aspect.

Costs of living are considerably lower. You will be able to find more than suitable housing for considerably less than $1000/mo. For example, housing on the former base, Clayton, is available from $450/mo for a 3B/1B townhome. The larger unit, also 3/1 l/2 (not including the separate maid's suite) is available for about $700 mo.

A fulltime, live in maid costs about $200/mo. Parttime costs about $12 to $15/day, depending.

As for your child - if he/she needs English schooling there are several options to choose from - there are a number of schools on the 'American' system, private schools with steep tuition basically... The International School of Panama, and Balboa Academy. Both, I'm sure have websites. (check using .org rather than .com at the end of a web address) And, there are other schools on the Panamanian system, but taught in English - The Oxford School comes to mind. They aren't as expensive. Not to mention, if you want to put your child in a Panamanian school, that's an option, tho I get that your child doesn't speak Spanish fluently.

Hope that helped.
