Twenty somethings moving to Panama

There is a lot of information out there for retiree expats but I have not found much for young people interested in moving to Panama.

My husband and I are 27 and we want to move to Panama City in 12-14 months once we have paid off debt and saved some $ for living expenses down there (plus U.S. student loans).

Since we are not retiring we are going to look for work while we are down there. We really have no idea where to start. I work at a non-profit and my husband is a lawyer. Is it difficult to find employment? Are there opportunities other than teaching English (i have taught English in Chile).

We are also going to use it as an opportunity to improve our Spanish. Can you recommend some Spanish tutors or institutes that are inexpensive?

Apartment prices in Panama city? My brother in law is living there now and pays $300 for a furnished 1 bedroom but it's on super loud Via Argentina. Can we find something nice in a nice neighborhood for $500 or less? Would you reccommend a furnished or unfurnished apt? I would rather decorate myself but is that going to cost a fortune?

Thanks for reading :) I hope you have some insight for us!

It'll be difficult to find employment in Panama City without being fluent in our language. Spanish skills are a must.

As for the apartment, you should be able to find a pretty nice furnished place for $5-700 bucks a month. Make sure you come with planty of cash. Most landlords want a sizable deposit from non-residents. Sometimes as much as 6 months rent up front.

Actually, for $5-700 a month you can own a pretty nice, small apartment in many parts of the city depending on your credit. Just a thought.

Hi, I have some answers to your questions. I have had experience with expats coming into Panama and all of them have come employed and their companies arrange must of the legal paperwork. I know a person that works all the legal aspects for several companies and is very efficient.

As far as teaching, you should contact big schools and colleges as Panamerican school, Isaac Rabin School, Balboa Academy school, Universidad Interamericana, Florida State University, University of Louisville. There are also some private language schools that you could contact.

If you have kids I wil suggest nice areas as: El Dorado, Villa de las fuentes, Obarrio, El Cangrejo, Albrook, Clayton. If you want a house instead of an apartment, closed neighborhoods are the best way to go. I life in one called Dorado Lakes. maybe you can look at some options in the construction company web site. www.Grupolospueblos.com

My sister is an english-spanish certified translator and could help with your documents translations, and I work in the insurance field, so I could help you with that, but as I told, I have had several expat friends coming to Panama, and helped with the relocation process as well. Health advice, home search, school search, furniture, etc.

Hope this information helps. Feel free to contact me and make questions. my e-mail es macurriola@yahoo.com
